My Rock Garden has slowed down to a mere trickle, while across the yard my main perennial border is exploding! I will be posting many pics in the Perrenial forum for thenext several months...hope to see you all over there as well!!

Lovely pics as always, Jamie. Your Erodium "Dark Eye" definitely is a treasure. I saw your rose thread today in the Roses Forum. Wonderful pictures.

Zuzu~
Thank-you for your kindness, you are always there with a kind word, and I truly appreciate it!!! I was just over at the "Blue" thread....can you even believe that thing....the second one must be as long, or longer that the first. You really struck a fancy that is shared by MANY, many people here...;o)

Thanks again for always being so quick with a kind word!!

Jamie, hi. I finally bit the bullet and got DSL and I loooove it. Best of all, it came from my phone company and costs only $14.95 a month for the first year--less than my $20 dialup ISP, which I will gladly cancel next week.

I think I told you about this Clarkia breweri that I got from Annie's this year. It's the pink one in this picture. It's gorgeous and it smells divine. After planting this one in the flower bed, where I would have to lie down on the ground to smell it, I bought two more to put in pots that could be closer to my nose. Did you get it from Annie's this year? If not, get it. You'll love it.

Zuzu,
I couldn't agree more about the faster internet! I got Broadband through my previous cable company...dropped the cble for DISH (way cheaper - twice as many channels for the kiddos and more gardening shows for me when I watch it) but kept the broadband internet......could not go back to dial-up now, no way,,,;)

I have this plant on my list for next year...I read your post about it somewhere and knew I had to have it....love the pic, just wish I could smell it!!!
This is so much better than the old days when you would rave about a plant and I would have to run to get a plant book to look it up....I love your pictures so much better....;o)!!!!

Have a Great 4th!
Jamie

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Hmmm. Now I might have to exchange my cable for dish. Cheaper, you say? My cable bill is getting outrageous--over $80 a month, and HBO is my only premium channel.

I got the Rozanne geranium from Krazy Keith's last week and I'm delighted. Do you ever order from them? I got two bare-root roses from them a couple of months ago and they're already blooming, so I ordered five more and got them last week. One is TerraCotta, which was mentioned in your rose thread. If you like roses with distinctive coloring, you'd probably like Distant Drums (or maybe you already have it). It has a lot of beiges in it. Here's a picture, although the blooms this time of year don't have the same color as in spring.

Oops. You can see I'm behind on my deadheading. I guess you know what I'll be doing on the 4th.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8b)

Zuzu~
I do have an interest in unusual colored roses...I have 'Hot Cocoa', and one other...can't think of it now....'TerraCotta' is on my list, with 'Jude the Obscure', will check out Krazy Keiths...keep hearing good things...and if you like them I know they must be good....I have always agreed with every nursery you recommend...
I love that rose...Distant Drums...gotta go check this website out . Oh No, just what I didn't need, another good online nursery!! I will let you know what I find...you big 'ol enabler you...LOL.....
Jamie

ps...My DISH Network costs half what my cable did....only $35.00 - $40.00 a month....for a lot of channels...check them out @

Jamie, the stuff at Krazy Keith's is obviously Wayside overstock, but the plants are somehow always better than the ones Wayside sends out, and the prices are way lower. The bulbs are especially nice. I just got three more Steve Siberian irises--big clumps for $2.95--and three more Sprekelia for $1.95 each. The clematis are tiny bare-root babies, but who cares at $2.95 and $3.95 a pop? That's what I want to pay for tiny bare-root babies. The roses are mostly $5.95, although there are a few pricier ones.

Hi Zuzu ~
I just went to Krazy Keith's.....sold out of everything I wanted...;o(, but I put the site on my favorites and will check back. I kept seeing things I wanted..I would click on them...SOLD OUT...every time...UGH!! Oh well, I really didn't need any new plants now. I am working on lots of hardscape stuff now that I own my Home....first one ever that I bought on my own...YAY!! :o)! Pathways, edging beds, picking, buying, and planting trees & shrubs, planning where to put the new beds.....now that this house is mine there will be lots, and lots of new beds....;o) I will be posting progress of each project on DG.....can't wait to get started, but the planning stage is fun too..;)

Did you sign up for the newsletter at Krazy Keith's? If you do, you'll get $5 off your first order. Watch for their iris sale. Last year they sold beautiful bearded iris for $1.60 each. I only found out about Krazy Keith's just after last year's iris sale. Got to see them on the Website and pout. There was one called Stairway to Heaven that I have to buy this year. It's absolutely gorgeous. Do you already have it? It's blue, so you might.

I remember buying my first house that was my very own. What a delicious feeling! Fall will be a busy time for you, planting all those trees and shrubs.

Now that I have DSL, I can't resist posting a picture with each message. This is Penelope.

Zuzu,
Thats how I feel about the Rose sale...I got to look at all the great deals - that everyone else got...Oh well, next year I'm gonna be ready!!! I did sign up for the news letter, wasn't going to miss those kind of sales again!!

Stairway to Heaven was the first Iris I ever got in a trade...amazing color on that one...I must have it here at this house - it's way up high on my "perennials to buy" list

Isn't High-speed internet the best??? Did that help your poor, slow, frustrating computer? It must have, your posting alot more pics. And I am LOVING that ;) That rose is amazing, gives a real two-tone effect as those pinkish buds fade to white....lovely!! Is it a Floribunda?? Or one of the Old Garden Roses?? Very delicate and pretty.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Penelope is a hybrid musk. Here's a link to it. Do you know this Website? It's invaluable.
http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?i=A4737&tab=10

Since you like peculiar colors, have you ever seen Smoky? I've written about it in several forums, so pardon me if you've already heard this.

I lost Smoky in a divorce in 1971 (he got to keep the house and I got to stay alive). I was never able to find it again, although I googled it every few years to see whether anyone had it. This year someone finally had it. Guess who: Vintage Gardens, within walking distance of my house. I naturally walked over there and bought a couple. One has already bloomed, and I missed the bud, but I have some pictures of the flower. One Website calls it "either the ugliest or the prettiest rose you've ever seen."

Take a look at the outer petals. That's the color of the bud. The bud is a smoky gray-mauve. When the flower opens, however, it's a totally different color. I suppose some people might think the two colors clash, but I think it's an amazing combination.

Hi Zuzu ~
I LOVE that rose, and have never even heard of it. Usually I have at least heard of the name, or recognize it from having read it somewhere, in one of my 103 gardening and flower books(my other passion - reading about all things Horticultural), or recall seeing it at the Portland Rose Garden, but that is a completely new rose, and I would have remembered that coloration, which is awesome and amazing!! I have so many things on my want list after seeing, or hearing about it from you. If you have anymore buds, I would love to see one. Does the nursery that has this rose do mail-order, or can roses be started from cuttings?? I only know that one way or another I am going to have that rose! LOL ;o) That sounded dramatic enough - I'm tired, what can I say?
Have a Great Day!
Jamie

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh, I am delighted that you like my Smoky. Vintage Gardens does indeed have mail order and it's a wonderful, wonderful nursery. They sell roses in bands, nice deep pots, and they usually have some kind of sale going on or coming up, where you buy four and get one or two free. The best thing, though, is that most of their roses, if not all of them by now, are own-root. That way, if the gophers nibble on just part of the root, you get the same rose when it revives, instead of a bunch of Dr. Hueys all over your garden. They have a great Website and they also branched out into hydrangeas recently and have a huge variety of those.

Here's another rose you might not have. It might actually be extinct because the guys from Vintage Gardens always want to raid mine. It's President Herbert Hoover--the hybrid tea, not the climber.

Here's another rose you might like (and possibly already have)--English Elegance.

Wow, I just love DSL.

I'm late to view this thread - really gorgeous plants! Jamie, in the third shot (with
Erodium "dark eye" - which is just lovely) what is your planter? It is white. It looks
quite different from most planters I've seen. And a nice size from what I can tell.

And where ever do you all stuff those lovely roses! I have a large property and
keep adding new flower beds every year but I never have enough room for all
the lovelies I want. So many of my roses were overcome by their neighbors that I
finally put in a rose garden. But it only holds 8 (maybe 12 at most) roses.

I guess I'll just have to check out your pictures and keep on digging. ;-)

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Roses discussed on a rock garden forum! Shame, shame. Rock garden purists would be appalled! LOL!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8b)

Hi Guys ~
I think Zuzu & I thought we were alone on this thred, as it had not been posted on by anyone but the 2 of us....we just got going and kept right on, thru many subjects....thats funny Todd...you "busted" us..LOL ;o)

Tammy, the planter is a long, narrow one, that I can't seem to find again, made of white, textured plastic, and a nice, large size. I always keep my eyes open to find similiar ones again...maybe someday...

And finally, Zuzu has an amazing property, full of the most abundant plantings, and the greatest variety of plants I have seen. You name it, she seems to have it somewhere! ;o) She will speak for herself soon, I am sure - but look for her to be posting more pics in the future, so we will all be able to see how she does it!! And yes, she does have a beautiful collection of roses, several of which are on my "must have" list!!

Jamie

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh-oh, the thread police. We're busted indeed, Todd. Hope you didn't notice that we also discussed the dread bearded iris somewhere in this thread. Actually, if Jamie and I hadn't met in some totally unrelated forum (containers, I think) and monopolized a thread there with all of our discussion of alpines, Jamie wouldn't have lobbied so hard for the revival of the alpine forum and it might still be defunct, so these things even out nicely.

Hi, Tammy. It's funny that you ask about where we "stuff" the roses, because mine are literally stuffed into any empty space. You can see that from the pictures, I think. You can barely see any rose foliage around English Elegance, for example, which is surrounded completely by pineapple sage. I started counting my roses a few years ago and stopped at 300. I buy two or three dozen new ones each year, but the gophers get away with an equal number, so I think our combined efforts are maintaining the rose balance. I started out here 20 years ago by setting up some nice and neat rose gardens, but they now have hundreds of other plants in them too.

Jamie, I appreciate your kind words about the abundance and variety of my plantings. Now, if I could just get rid of the varieties I dislike, such as the blasted kniphofia and arum, which seem to be immortal. I really admire nice and neat gardens, but I'm such a glutton that I'll probably never have one of those.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Now that I have DSL, I can't resist illustrating my gluttony.

Someone in another forum asked what my garden had looked like when I bought the house. I replied that the only good thing here was an opium poppy, which is still coming up 21 years later, but never where I scatter the seeds. I took this picture of the poppy for him.

Ok, I'll show part of my rock garden as of July 4. Note there are NO roses OR bearded iris in my rockery! LOL!

I see I'm not the only glutton, Todd. What an abundance of beauty! That's really stunning.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Todd--nice picture, but you need something to spice it up like a nice big miniature rose! Zuzu probably has one she'll send you! LOL t.

p.s. I've been lurking...

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I could sense your benevolent presence, Tabasco. Congratulations on your Color Echoes threads. They're certainly popular. I lurked for a while and then felt compelled to join the game.
