The wind is breaking my brugs! and they were FULL OF BUDS!

Summerville, SC

This year I planted several brugs in my yard and they have done great....but every time we have a little stormy weather with winds, I go out to find some of them with the tops just broken off. This am I woke up to find Isabella's entire top laying on the ground - complete with about 40 BIG buds!. That makes the second Isabella that it's happened to and one Rosamond got it last week. It is so frustrating to wait for the blooms to find them just whacked like that! The ones that have broken are not tree form but are very bunchy. Any suggestions? is there anything I can do to help prevent this? would they be stronger if I thinned them out? Thanks! Sandy

Oh what a heart ache. If it were a tree form I would say stake it on both sides and tie it well. But with a bush I do not know. I am so sorry. It has happened to me so I know the terrible feeling.

Kell, it is heartbreaking, isn't it? Thing is, right next to the Isabella is a Golfito - it's fine, then there's a versi-peach - it's fine. I have Isabella's in 2 different beds across the yard from each other and BOTH have gotten broken like that. I did have Rosamond lose just one branch but with the Isabella's I seem to lose 2/3 of the plant (or more!) The Isabella that broke last week left me 2 small pieces sticking up from the ground. Anyway, needless to say, I'll have some extra Isabella's if anyone wants them for postage.

FWIW, SBHDRH, I had the same problem with Isabella, I live in southeast Arky, and our wind isn't as strong as I would expect yours might be. She breaks right off at the ground, broke my heart. I slapped mine in the bubbler and she took forever to root, but finally did and I have her in the ground, in a more protected place and now her leaves are all puffy and curled. I dunno.

Oh my, Sandy. I've had some branches broken off from the winds and several seedlings broken off by the dogs. I know it's disheartening to have this happen and lose so much of your plant.

Sherrylike, I THOUGHT it might be Isabella - now if the same thing happened to you, I would bet $ on it! Geesss now to figure out where to move the remains to....

you know then the first one that broke last week, I didn't want to mess with rooting the stalks in water so I just stuck them in a 5 gallon bucket with damp potting soil and the smaller pieces I stuck in gallon pots. (and I mean I literally just STUCK them). Today all but a couple were perky and I think they might make it.

Sandy, I can't remember if I told you but I had trouble rooting her, but I put her in soil and I think it's going to be a go. I'm so glad yours are perky, it's it a blessing when that happens??!!!

Sandy,
I'm a new Brug grower... have no-name yellow and a white (I grew from a seed pod that was suppose to be pink).
Do you have cuttings you will trade for postage or $?
Tell me how much and I get it in the mail.

Maybe making a tree out of her and staking her really good as described above would be the answer. I am so very sorry this has happened to you.

Thanks all, I definitely will have to re-think where I put Isabella. Ida, this was one you got me started with so you KNOW how much I hated her breaking off!

MallieB, I would be glad to share with you. Email me your address.

SBHDRH - I share your pain this morning. My first brug and only blooming one got a limb with 4 blooms broken off during a storm yesterday. I just put the limb in a pot with another plant. I really hurt removing those blooms.

Sandy, I'm so sorry to hear about what is happening to your brugs. This weather is crazy and can really cause problems. I watched Becca Lynn bloom sitting in water last year because of the storms breaking her off at the ground. No fun. They aren't as pretty in a bucket. Hopefully you won't get more of the high wind weather. However, we had it last night so it's heading toward someone unless it wore out. They predicted 60 mph winds at 10:35, but they never came. I was so relieved. I do use a lot of cotton clothesline rope to tie things around here. I think having a piece of it tied loosely around the whole plant might keep it from breaking. Unless staked and tied at the top as well, you will always be taking a chance on losing the top out of one in a wind storm. If they are potted, you can just lay the pots over. That is unless they have rooted into the ground already. LOL!

Judy, I really hate it about your storm and your brug being broken, it's so disappointing, after you take such good care. Not that it is any consolation but a big fat squirrel fell right in the middle of my not so big Eternity, I was just sick. But, you know what, it gave Eternity a jump start and she looks great, better than I ever expected. I'm thinking about trying it with Ricki Ticki, tossing him into a few slow starters, think a cat will do as well as a squirrel???

LOL Sherry.

Judy, sorry to hear about yours too.
Brugie, I did try to enjoy the blooms in a bucket but like you said, they just aren't the same.
Sherry, now that you mention the squirrel, I am wondering if maybe that's what happened to mine instead of the wind or maybe, just maybe one of our barn cats crashed them. When our son was home with his Jack Russell, the jack kept the cats out of the yard but now that he's moved out I notice they "sneak" into the yard alot. Of course, my little chihuahua doesn't do much to scare them away. - even though HE thinks he's ferocious! (the cats don't) lol, Sandy

This is a photo of Eternity after the squirrel fell on it - before the squirrel, it only had the big leaves, no branches or suckers. The squirrel broke off the top and fell right where all the bushy new stuff is coming out, it's tripled in size - the leaves with holes are from his fall. It started growing immediately after it was broken all up...who knew??
