first water lily bloom. Planted out very late this year, around mid May, so they are just starting to pop up now. The recent heat spell certainly gave them a boost.
This little bloom is only 3/4" across. It's one I bought nine years ago and I'm going to have to figure out it's name again (tag floated away two years ago). If it develops more red it might be Pygmae Rubra but I'm not sure yet. It should be sunk down to 10" now but I had minor surgery on my foot so will have to wait until it heals.

It's a start...
It's beautiful Pam and I can't believe how small it is. I just love ponds and all the plants and everything that go with them. I hope your foot heals quickly.
Thanks Sandy...it's a real tiny cutie! :) It will develop either a more solid light pink or it will turn red with more heat. I couldn't believe it when I spotted it. It didn't bloom last year due to our non-summer on the prairies. I'm soooooooo happy to read that this summer is supposed to be back to normal temperatures... +30F is expected to be here again soon (but without humidity).
I hope it heals very quickly too.....this week off has been hard not doing all I would like to out there. :(
What a pretty bloom! Take care of your foot.
:) Donna
Very nice Pam. Makes a pond all the more special. Heal quickly.
You are so far ahead of me Pam...I just put my overwintering waterlily in my large urn.....it has one bud just forming so it might be open by August. Do you overwinter your outside? My brother in calgary was thinking about a pond but I thought he would have to overwinter the root indoors, so that turned him off...my brother likes a CARE-free garden!
Hope your foot heals soon.
Todd
Very nice Pam.
Thanks everyone :)
........after the previous summer's *almost* no shows I was shocked to see it's bloom (out of 30 water lilies only 5 cultivars bloomed last summer).
Todd I keep mine in the basement fridge (my father and I found that our water lilies stayed in deep dormancy when they are in there). My almost 4 foot deep pond freezes to the bottom so the rhizome would turn to mush if I kept them out there. He wouldn't find my ponds carefree come fall. ;)

Pam, what did you do to your foot? The lily is gorgeous!! E
Don't know Elaine....I got a deep infection in it last week and the Doctor had to take a scapel to it and leave it open (freezing doesn't work well with an infection :( ). It happened last spring too. He tested it and couldn't find any bacteria in it (I originally thought maybe the manure I put in the garden 3 years ago might be causing it).
Lilypon, how is your foot? I didn't even know you were hurting!
Hey weeds! So good to see you back Ü ......I was starting to wonder where you'd disappeared to!
It's the same thing that happened last year.... except I didn't get as sick this time. I'm on a 2nd batch of antibiotics now so we will see. Doc can't figure out why it's getting infected...nothings coming back in the tests??? However I might be put under Docs orders to wear flip flops both summer and winter at work......boy am I gonna get funny looks! ;)
and frozen toesies
LOLOL.....that is true.
