My In-The-Garden African Violet

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Just for the heck of it I decided that I would put one in my semi-shade garden under a leaf to see what happened...

Well, it's still alive after 10 days, dirty face and all..(just rained) I can't see any flowers as yet, but I will check again in a couple of day....Don't want to scare it.

Just thought this forum would like to know....Please don't have me committed.

very interesting. can you take a pic of the general area so we can see how you placed it?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

This pic barely shows it under the cordyline, Dr. Brown...It's right back of the brighter green thingy in the right bottom corner.

Hey that's pretty cool...except for the dirty face...lol

I have not been that brave yet. I hear they do fine out on a shaded patio, but here it's even 90 in the shade lately so I just wasn't willing to test it yet...guess I'm a big chicken.

Keep us opsted and see if it likes the heat and will bloom for you, too.

Very interesting !

This is not a stretch for this lil one.....All, that is all 6, live on my patio and have done so for quite a few months....The pool is screened so that gives some filtering for the sun and the heat...We have only gotten up to about 86 here so far.

Plus,,,I only paid $1.00 for the poor soul.....she is a rescue from Lowe's. Here is where they all live.

very interesting. This might by the answer to what to do w/ some of those successfully rooted cuttings

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

That's it...we'll start a new forum.....Ground Cover African Violets......LOLOL

Between you and me.......I figured if God grew them outside to begin with, they should do fine. After all, He did not create any "Inside Plants"......fhey all belong outside.....LOLOLOLL

You're right Hap...all plants started outside so maybe we just baby them too much...lol

I always wondered with AV's being so easy to propagate why they weren't sold as spring annuals.
I think I will put a few douplicates outside on the patio and test them here...

Hap, my cousin in NC had a AV in her kitchen window that wouldn't bloom. In a a fit of frustration she planted it outside in her flower bed...it bloomed! Soooo....every year that was the drill. Out for the summer, back in the pot inside for the winter.

How's it doing Happy? I am very curious about this one. :)Susanne

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

It's still doing well...it's under a big leaf of a cordyline and seems quite happy. It's very shady and I don't think it will bloom here, but it's alive. When the sun goes down in the sky a little, I am going to move it to a more sunny location. I'll keep you posted..

Well?? How's it going? My strep is gettin ready to re-bloom for me in a shady spot - I haven't screwed up enough corage for an AV in the shade yet...

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Remember this thread?????

Well, it finally bloomed today. See her smile?

Hap

PS.

I put another 4-5 that I had that weren't doing too well, (from neglect) so we will see what they do.

Before we moved last year ( wished we dug it up ) he had one Elise 24 inches across perfect to the eye form always blooming. It went threw hurricanes hot sun, rain hose watering got no Speical attention.
Were going to plant some more in our morning sun shade garden in a few weeks :))

Hap are you asking me where? Cali but we've been having just about as much rain as you all in FL.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

In Dunedin Florida When we sold our trailer last year our garden beeds were out of this world. We had spent thousands of dollars. We had so many pictures of our flowers in the FloridaPhoto magazine and the opwner gave us a CD with over 500 of our blooms he took. Well hubby's health mine...and all the work need on the trailer we moved into he had to do. And then he moved us.. on and on he still managed to get 15 thousand Christmas lights up with bad back.
We took a few cuttings of stuff. But now the people torn the yard up they left a few things . The yard looks nothing like it did when we owned it . It's depsresiing to me and I don't get out much so I have only seen it twice from the street on my wheel chair ride by.
I always use to take sickly looking babies roll out on the ramp area and dump them lol. Hubby would plant them . They were his. We always kidded his was the largest one we had and it got no special treatment . I mean when I dumpped them they were tiny little babies I just did not like how they were growing. He has magic touch with gardens and loves plants too.
They even dug up our favorite expensive year round rose bushes and trees. The Plumerias still were blooming there, some of the mail box garden, coleuos,
Some expensive rare Hybiscus trees/bushes. I had beautiful Dahlias, and other bulbs, we had a garden of Eden.
Now sense we moved we have a few easy growing things and favorites. But not as much his health , my care time just does not allow the time and means for it anymore. Our lots are good size 80 x 100 feet and last yard larger we had corner lot with two driveways.
Oh the Memories in life.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

We got as much rain in 28 hours as we had from August 2005 to now ! Only lot's of people are without homes and cars and roof of Bed and Baths caved in . Cars floating around like boats. We are lucky we are higher and have good drainage .

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Thanks Allison,

Sorry you had to leave your place. I went through that when I got divorced almost 25 years ago. It broke my heart to leave that house and garden....the ex...no problemo.... I had several landscapers ask to go though the gardens to see what I had done.

Then, after a 20 year hiatus from gardening, I am back crazier than ever. Now I'm growing plants that I just had pictures of......things I used to drool over are now in my garden. Life is kind, if you wait long enough...lol

We had rain all last night but it was a very soft rain....nice this am and now rain again this afternoon. But the babies are loving it.

Hap

Oh yes everytime it rains all the plants smile :)) And say Thank you !
