alocasia are so hard to keep alive. I thought i killed a bunch of them last year and dumped them out and used the dirt to pot up other things. Now I have different a. popping up in strange places. They went dormant and I forgot they do that.

Foley, AL

yep I know what you mean... I have had some pop up across the road... and they pop up at different times....

Any idea how long they usually go dormant for? I have an Alocasia xAmazonica "African Mask" that went dormant on me 4 or 5 months ago and I'm just now seeing a new leaf. When watering Alocasias, I've found that I have to let them dry out before I water again or I risk rot.

Foley, AL

its depends on the type... they need heat and humidity did you put them a green house or did you do them inside?

I've had it just off of a southern window and no a/c and windows always open, gets a little warm in there. Would that qualify as a greenhouse?

Foley, AL

don't know.... I know where in the same zone but our humidity is different..... I think for humidity you can put a pebbles in some water and set it on top of it.

Most of my tropicals are sitting on pebbles. I also have two colocasias that sit in big saucers full of water so that helps to keep things a little more humid during the summer. Typically, the humidity is only about 25% when it gets really hot here so I've been hestitant to put a lot of my tropicals outside.
