Michelle,I'm looking for seeds and info on this plant too. How to grow it and how to turn it into that delicious candied angelica my mother used on and in cakes and which I can't find on sale round here. Can anyone help? Thanks. Maggi

Hi Michelle-I thought you might be Spanish, due to the 'azul' in your DG name. I'm English, but have lived in northern Spain for 18 years-my husband is Basque. Infact my DG name means 'witch' in Basque.
My daughter(16) has just started dating a boy who is Spanish / Moroccan mix-tell me it's a good combination !!!!
Now,down to business-I would love a copy of your candied angelica recipe. I'm not sure how the next bit works 'cos I'm new on here. Will you post the recipe here or send it to my DG mail? Please LMK so I can look out for it. Gracias.(With or without lisp,I'm sure you know that much Spanish!)

I've got angelica growing and it has just set seeds. I grows very large. I moved it last year to a spot where it can just do it's thing. When the seeds ripen, I'll put them on the exchange board.

Wow that's great Pam. LMK when they're ready 'cos I definitely want some. I'm preparing a list of seeds I've got to swap so I hope I'll have something you want. If I can figure out how to make a trade list thing it should be on there soon. Still getting up to speed with all this DG stuff, but it's great fun 8¬ ).

hi y'all- i'm late joining this thread- but when it stops raining I'll take a picture of my angelica- some people don't like to grow it because it sets a lot of seeds and get's so huge the second year--but I love it - plus I love the name. It dies after flowering (biennial) and the seeds really need to be planted right away because they lose their potency quickly. I'd be able to send seeds to folks who wanted them too- they will be ripe in july sometime....

Sjms:your not to late sjms, i hope you give advice on how to plant it, will it come up next year? if you sow the seeds like in august and survive the winter? I would love pics of the foilage and the flowers? and is it Archangelica?

Sorgina: what does LMK mean? and I would like to know how to make my list of wants and haves too:)

Woodthrush:I would like advice on how it grows is it a shady plant? does it like the sun? Have you ever used it?

I've got recipes in an herb book but haven't tried them. It does grow quite large. Mine did not bloom the first year. And the second year, it got so huge, I moved it to another location. My trade list is at gardenweb. I wish I could just cut and paste it to here. Way too much time to type it all in categories. Here's photos of bloom and seed pods.

azulfire- for me angelica archangelica grows as well as any weed- it likes moist, semi shade. the seeds sprout in the fall (or some in the early spring) and live fine over the winter- their first spring is when you should move them to where you want them to grow. they have a tap root, and don't like moving too much, infact even when they are young, moving them can delay their blooming for a season. for their first summer they will grow 2-3 ft tall and look sort of like a lovage plant- or a really hefty astilbe, then the next year they will start taking off and get 5 to 8 ft tall with 3 or 4 large globe flowers like woodthrush has pictured- they make a real statement in the landscape- for some reason, they have chosen the front walkway to grow here, and people always want to know what the heck it is! then, unfortunately, they start to turn yellow, and leaves begin to die as the seeds are ripening- that is the awkward time, because the seeds need to ripen, but sooner or later, you can chop the whole thing down, and believe me, if you let the seeds ripen, you will have lots of angelica babies very soon! sometimes it takes 2 years for them to flower, sometimes 3... oh! i know, they are monocarpic!!!!

Michelle, sorry not to have answered your question sooner. LMK means 'let me know'.It takes a while to get familiar with all the abbreviations on here doesn't it?
Buenas noches, Maggi.
