Steamed hoyas

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

It's painful for me to post this, but if I can't do it here, who else will listen. So last week, I moved a few, okay seven hoyas outside, I put them in a terrarium misted, walked away. A couple hours later I walked back outside, they were all destroyed. Steamed if you will. My husband informed me that I pretty much magnified them through the glass and added salt to the wound by misting them. You would think that I would know better by now. Actually it seems like everyone I told knew that was a stupid idea. Lost in this disaster were, nummeraloides, minibelle, PNG-4 and 1, sariare, halloween hoya, and bordenii(if this one was labeled correctly). How stupid. This scared me, so I moved all of the hoyas I had moved outside, inside, I don't want to lose anymore. I had been misting them too. The others were hanging in trees, which protected them more from the southern afternoon sun. I guess I have some more learning(obviously), and will have to repurchase these little babies.

Oh, I am so sorry for you! I have to admit that even though I know better, I fried a couple of mine moving them in direct sun too quickly. If you defoliate all the leaves, some may return from the stem. Maybe you could put them under a tree for the rest of the year and save at least a couple of them.

Thanks for the advice, I already removed most of the leaves, that was very painful, unfortunately some of the steams are pretty toasted themselves.

I'm sorry to hear about your hoya babies, send me your address again and I will send you cuttings of mini-belle and bordenii (if mine is labeled correctly).

Blessings,

Seriously, you are so great Awanda!! BTW, my plants are lovin' the pumice in their mixture!!

So sorry to hear of your loss Heather. It's very upsetting to lose a plant but one as special as a hoya would really upset me too. With a little help from your friends you'll be back in business in no time. Stop beating yourself up! Everyone makes mistakes.

Oh, dear. What a pity!!! Let me know if I can help replace anything.

I don't think your other hardy plants should be bothered being outside...it was the glass/enclosure that did them in.

I brought cuttings back from Vegas gifted from Deb. I kept them in a closed ziplock with lots of air...always works...even shipping. However, the room had AC, too much moisture built up inside the bag over night and MUSH! I was able to save one small cutting of each. Darn. These are great lessons....

Aloha,

So sorry to hear about losing your lovely Hoya plants. I can imagine how I would feel. :(

Sorry to hear of your loss too. We all make mistakes because we didn't think of the consequences before our actions. I lost two very dear hoyas because I had them hung over our kitchen sink. They hung on each side of the halogen light but were closer to the cabinets. Then one day, I brought them down to water & hung them closer to the light. I only use the light when I'm washing dishes in the evenenings but in the matter of days, I had cooked/fried the plants. I didn't notice it until one day I had a few leaves fall on me so I took the hanging pots down & the hoyas were dead. They had previously been doing great getting morning sun & more moisture from the sink but I guess this time they were just too close to the light. I'm now terrified to try hanging any plant there now.

Thanks for all of the kind words, and the horror stories. My husband keeps telling me not to over care for them. Now I understand his point. It's fun because the more and more interest I take in my hoyas, the more he gets involved. A couple of weeks ago for my birthday, he got me a mini greenhouse and a thermomator. Then we spent that night painting our three season porch a bright pink color and moved the plants out to it. We named the room "Florida". It is so relaxing! With all of the positive I get out of my hoyas a few setbacks seem fair enough.
