What am I missing. On a few of my younger plants, I am seeing the margins of the leaves curving down. I have tried MORE fert, water (has been raining a lot), looking for bugs and finding none.
Clues?
Carol
curled/rolled leaves
Carol, do you remember me whining on your fert thread about burned leaves? There were leaves curving down too, not too many, but I notice everything. Also, I suggested that the guy that works for me might have been responsible. Well, after going to the nursery yesterday I think I've found out what is causing some of my problem. There were plants there that looked just like mine and I said, hey, did someone strike them with a torch?? He said, nope, I said get outta here. He said the problem was that some, but not all of the plants dried out too much and when the fert hit them they fried. I'm almost positive that's what happened to mine with the curving down leaves, as well as the burned leaf edges AND, that's why only some of them have it, and most don't. Did that make sense?? So, far, it's the only thing I can figure. I'll be anxious to hear what others have to say...
Hmmm, sure makes sense, but I have no burnt edges (which can also be from salt burns...too high sodium in the potting soil especially if you use Coir). Will take photos today. These plants, too, are r e a l l y slow growers... Am about to yank them!!!
Staying tuned!
I'm having that problem right now. Check the growth point and see if it has thick leaves. It could be broad mites.
One other thing Carol, you said 'curled/rolled leaveds' - I've also had a leaf roller, a cat, that rolls itself up in a leaf and eats - they got on my brugs from my thornless blackberries, and i didn't have but five, but they ate the tops out of five seedlings, special ones, of course. I don't think I have mites, I don't have any thick leaves but I won't count anything else out...my digital is working for a living today at the office so I can't take pics - I don't use Coir, and the burned edged leaves don't curl, and curled down leaves aren't burned, but the curled/rolled leaves were eaten and not burned. Say, who's on first, lol!!!
Hmmm We have a Banana Leaf Roller who does the same thing...but the leaves weren't rolled - just drooping at the margins. Picture to come.
I found another curious beast on my HG. a beige "fly" acting like a white fly. Fungal gnats? A juvenile stage of White Flies?
Carol
I have a white 'something', not sure what it is, tried to get it identified on Garden Foes, but no luck yet. The thing(?) I see, has white 'powder' on the stem of the plant, when I touch the powder, this white 'bug' or what ever it is, flies into space, I think it jumps and I do not know what kind of damage, if any, that it does. I cannot get a photo because 'its here, then it's gone' when I touch it. Carol, you would enjoy Garden Foes, lots of good stuff there. I did have the leaf roller identified there - the leaf roller is a cat, wrapped in a white 'silk' cocoon and the cat is in the middle, the ones I've seen have been wrapped tightly and the cat has an 'aggressive' attitude, squiggles away almost before I could catch it. What ever I thought the white thing I've seen might be what you have seen. I've only seen two of the the things that are here and I don't think mine are gnats or white flies, but I've never seen neither of those, so maybe it is...
Thanks, SL...I will mosey on over there and learn some stuff...
One other think you guys, have any of you had that cat/bug called "hail"? Big, Big, holes that looks like someone hit them with buckshot? Mine got that last week and I am still taking leaves off they looked so awful. Shreaded leaves.
Darn, if God doesn't send the critters to get them, she will strike them with lightening. LOL
Jeanette
I will look up that 'hail' bug, if anyone will have it, I'm sure there is one in my collection, lol, but sadly true!! My bug collection is much larger than my brug collection!!!
I would like this important (to me) question answered. Next week, my plants are due for their 2nd round of Bayer 3 in 1. Should I go ahead and give it to the plants that have damage from too much of something?? I do know to water them in really good this time, but I don't want to damage them further. OTOH, I need the 3 in 1 for bug control. TIA!!!
Jeanette, have you seen a photo of the hail caterpillar?? I cannot locate one on the bug site. There is a red/black/white cat - is it the one you are talking about? If so, I haven't seen one of those - yet....
We have a Chinese Beetle (Japanese?). Lives in the ground during the day....eats small holes in leaves... Imidocloprid Tree and Shrub drench works well on them...or you can be the predetory bug and pick them off at night. Sevin works, too, on the undersides of the leaves.
I have a call into my Ag. Agent with these questions....stay tuned!
Carol
I sure hope it kills cucumber beetles too. They are so fresh. I see them mating right on my brug leaves. So brazen! Squish squish!
Doris, leaf roller damage does not look like that, or mine didn't; however, I have plants that look like yours and I've been thinking it was chemical damage of some sort. I will be closely watching this thread to see if someone can tell us what is causing this. I treated (with chemicals) all my plants, and only some look like your photo, some have yellow on the leaf edges, others have yellow spots, and, I'm thinking that it's possible that the plants damaged might not have been wet enough when I applied the chemical. Could that have happened to yours??
Sherry, this one has not been treated with anything, it is one of the last ones kell sent me, only had MG
Doris, when I said chemicals, I was talking about 3 in 1 and Bayer Tree/Shrub, etc, but since you didn't use any of those, what about fertilizer?? I wonder if the damage would look about the same from too much fert?? I don't use MG, but I did use quite a bit of fertilizer too, and I know with plants, that they should be at least slightly damp before giving fert and that is the only thing I can figure, because all my plants had the same stuff and not all are damaged. I hope we find the answer, Doris!!
Ok, I'm sorry, I was pulling your leg. The "hail" cat is white, about as big around as a small marble and melts after it goes through the leaves, leaving holes, and hits the ground. Sorry.
Here is the information I gave Jeff on the systemic I use:
Jeff, Wouldn't life be grand if we could just use a little sugar and honey and the darned things would go away. Well, let me tell you, up here in the northwest we have such a short growing season that I don't have time for that crap.
I have had a container, plastic container, 5 lbs, of RosePride Systemic Rose & Flower Care for several years. Granted I have not used it on a whole lot of things, but if they have bugs then this comes out. Even though it has some rose fertilizer in it. Doesn't matter. I am just about out and I hope I can find it again. NOT on edibles.
It is Ortho, RosePride, SOLARIS Trademarks of Monsanto Company. Di-SYSTON Trademark of Bayer AG, Leverkusen.
Manufactured for the SOLARIS Group of Monsanto Company.
8-12-4 guaranteed fertilizer analysis
Total nitrogen 8%
Availiable Phosphate 12%
Soluable Potash 4%
One easy step feeds and protects plants against insects for up to 6 weeks. This product enters plants through roots and will not be washed off by rain or watering. Even new growth is fully protected from insect damage.
Product is NOT for use on edible plants, fruit trees, lawns or container grown plants.
BUT, I have been using it on my container grown plants for years with no problems. NOT on edibles.
Now you know as much as I do. Jeanette
* Dave's Garden
I am not telling you guys this for the fertilizer in it. I have not been able to find the systemic without the fertilizser so I will put up with this amount of rose fertilizer even on my acidic plants if they have bugs.
Jeanette
kareoke, that looks like nutrient deficiency problems with your leaves, like a calcium or boron deficiency, causing that curling.
Thanks for all the help, all my Brugs get treated alike only my smaller ones do not get as much MG.
Doris
Kareoke...I just found webs on a young leaf that was looking like yours.
Sending a leaf in with DH to the Extension Service today...maybe I will have an answer....
Carol
Back to rolled/curved leaves. The ex-chief etomologist and the chief plant pathologist both could find nothing on the brug leaves that were curled. Think it must be something varietal....
AlohaHoya, same thing here, I just got home from the Conservation office, only place around here to go to, they said they found nothing, and it was not caused by bugs, said maybe it was something that happened to some Brugs
Carol, I've been told the same thing, I don't know what to think, I went through the same thing last year and never found the answer...
Kareoke...forgot to mention...they also found a second mite on the leaf in question that looks like yours.... Said wettable sulpher would do the trick.
I think you should try some foliar spray of micronutrients, like I said, it looks like a micronutrient deficiency, especially if you have it in pots, you can fertilize it all day but if something isn't right in the soil, such as the pH, the plant can't use the nutrients you are pouring on the soil, so try a foliar spray of micronutrients and see what happens. You can buy bottles of chelated iron and micronutrients as most garden centers, for calcium you can get the spray that you use for blossom end rot on tomatoes, for boron deficiency, you can buy the household borax like for laundry and put, I think, 1/2 to 1 tsp per gallon of water and spray the leaves.
I use micro-nutrients but I never thought of foliar feeding with them. You can bet I'll try it. The other thing about pots, for me anyway, is that not all my pots have the same soil mixture, so who knows what the pH is or what to do for it. I really want all mine in the ground, but I'm at that stage that I'm 'afraid' of my special brugs, again, lol, but true. Thanks Mary, I appreciate your suggestions...
Well, you guys need a shot of Scoots malnutritioned specimens.
Jeanette
Sherry I wish all mine were in pots, I have a lot more than I thought I would ever have, and no amount of watering in the ground is enough, now we are told we must conserve water, it is in the high 90s no rain in over a week and none expected for the next ten days.
I live alone so my water bill has been about the same for several years, they called me last week to see if I had a leak, now that we are not supposed to water it is going to be tough.
Doris
(gggggg)
Doris a couple years ago I got a letter from the city. I'm thinking "Oh, now what? It's not time for bills. Maybe a complaint or something?"
Nope - they were just letting me know the water bills were about to be released and were offering to come by to check for leaks and to not get alarmed because the bill was very high. Now I WAS worried. When I got it - ehhhh just what I expected for the summer bill. Must've been a new employee. :)
Gosh, Doris, what a bad break!! In my little corner of the world, it is way easier to grow the brugs in the ground, assuming my dogs don't break a plant off, but that's only happened once, so it's really not a problem. I have to water brugs in pots three times a day when it's really hot. This year, as a matter of necessity, I'm learning to spray the plants with a water hose at dusk and sometimes in the early morning, then I water each plant by hand, doing half one day and the other half the next day. Heaven only knows what I'll do if I have to be away from home this summer. I had to get a dedicated line for my cement pond and the plants, because it's the cost of the sewer that drives our bills up. The line was costly because I had to run it from quite a distance, but it definitely keeps our regular water bills down and it only cost about $8 a month. Good luck and I really hope they won't ration your water!!!!!!
8ft. my water bill already doubled last month, and I know I am watering a lot more Brugs now. I could be in real trouble *S*
Doris
I get so aggrivated with the city when it comes to our water bill. We are like you Sherry, the more water you use....the higher the sewer costs are. I've tried to explain all of this to them, but they don't care. And of course with a pool also...it really gets high. Our normal bill during the hot summer months is a little over $200.00. And it's a little under $40.00 during winter or non watering months. I need a dedicated line now!
Doris,
Think about rain barrels so you could stock up next time it rains?? There is some excellent information on the Internet in regard to this.
Good Luck,
Judy
I know exactly where you are Brinda!!! Our dedicated water line has worked out really nicely but my source is a long way from the majority of the spigots, and, we have a bazillion spigots and they serve 4 homes and my guesthouse, which is why we accepted the distance from the source so readily. The base fee is $8 and we seldom go over that, even in the summer, we never empty the cement pond and only have to add occasional water. I'm afraid rain barrels wouldn't work here, except, possibly very late fall, winter and early spring. At the time of the heavy garden watering, it's often doesn't rain enough to collect much water. I do think that a sprinkler system or drip system might be more cost effective if you don't have a dedicated line. Please keep us posted as to what you guys decide to do, I love options and learning what others do in same or similar situations...
Being on catchment water, during droughts we get very nervous!!! I keep garbage cans (the plastic ones) under any run off from the roof that doesn't go into the gutters>catchment. I use them to wash my pots and dip into them to hand water stuff nearby. Water IS so precious!!! When we lived on the boat we caught the rain runoff from the decks....and showered with a 1.5 litre soda bottle with a hole in the cap! After a dip in the ocean it was a perfect rinse off!!!
Have you thought of using coir chunks mixed in with your potting media? They rewet instantly and hold moisture a long time without making anything soggy!!! Not like peat, when they dry out, they rewet quickly. Be sure to rinse the chunks well....we leave them in a diving bag on the driveway or in one of the garbage cans.
Aloha,
Carol
I am finding this thread really interesting because I have a pretty good size rooted cutting that has been curling and dropping leaves like crazy since a week ago. Now the tips of the new growth look weird too. It is the only one that I have that is doing this, and I treat most of mine the same, fertilizer, and this one gets about half a day/ morning sun (adjusting for container versus ground growth.) This one is in the ground and looked great when I installed her the first week of May. I am stumped, that's for sure.
The only advantage it seems that I have as far as watering goes, is that I am one of the last houses in Buffalo still on a flate rate for my bill. They have come three times to install the "manditory" meter, but find a problem with my pipes each time (my house was built in 1880.) I told dh don't fix the situation until the summer is over LOL. Last week the neighborhood kids had my hose on from 9:30 am until 9:00 pm. Imagine the gallons...yikes. I wish I could water for all of you on restrictions and in drought environments, 'cause believe me, I'd be happy to. I wish!! As it is I water almost the whole block (at least 8 houses....I think we have the world's longest hose set-up.)
Oooooo sorry, I forgot to mention that the beige looking white fly is not dangerous. Experts told me it wasn't supposed to be there! I told them to tell the bug that!
Carol, isn't coir, coconut? Where do you get them? Didn't you say bricks? I think my daughter bought one one time. I will have to ask her. Do you just put one in the bottom of the pot or what?
Jeanette
