New Book

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

One of my fellow Master Gardeners just sent out these links to a newly released book on tropicals in Hawaiian gardens. She got a peek at it and said it gave her goose bumps!!! Marie Neals' book "In Gardens..." has been the bible for all these many years and very difficult, if not impossible to find. I can tell you that I am calling the local bookstore and putting it on hold immediately.....OK...as soon as they open!

I saw that it is the same price from a local book store and the Bishop Museum... And I like to keep our local economy healthy...not Honolulu's. Basically Books specializes in Hawaiiana and has a terrific selection of plant books. Their toll free # is 1-800-983MAPS if you are looking for any specific plant book. Crisie didn't have any of the new books in stock, but will reorder and let me know....

Well...I got my copy and O M G - it is fabulous! Crisie has copies and can get more within a week.

Here, I think, it says it all:

For many users of this book, the informal text discussion sections will be the most frequently consulted. The subjects addressed in the discussion include the following, generally presented in the order shown. Gaps in coverage often reflect the inadequate state of published information for many propical plants.

number of taxa (genera per family, species per genus)
geographic distribution (where the taxon grows wild)
ecological range in the wild
where cultivated
relative abundance in Hawai'i
history of cultivation (in HI and elsewhere)
landscape uses in Hawaii
flowering and fruiting season (in Hawaii and elsewhere
Horticultural information
pests and diseases
propagation methods...

This book is over 20 years in the making...

I am so happy I am squeeling!!!

Carol
