Beautiful Ric! You need a new plant to become addicted to! Do you have any wide angle shots of your yard? By the looks of your pictures, you have a tropical paradise there.

Welcome Kdiggler, Kevin, to Dave's. I just said Hi to you over in the brug forum. Glad to see you found your way over here.

I love both yours Kevin and Rick. I need to check this plant out. So tell me Rick, if you would, in your zone 9B do you get frosts? And do these tolerate them?

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Kell, Ric and I are in very similiar climates. It's always a struggle during the few really cold snaps we get. Frost does happen occasionally but not often. When it gets really cold I just soak the ground as good as I can before nightfall and cover them with sheets to protect them from the wind. I have over 15 different species of heliconias. They blooms are all different and to die for. good luck

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So you are 9B also, Kevin? I may have to try one of these then. These pics sure are enticing.

Last winter we only got one light frost all winter. But you never know which year you may get a killer one. How do they do with tons of rain? Winter is our rainy season.

THANKS

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

The absolutely love lots of rain...just make sure the soil they're in has good drainage b/c they don't like "wet feet". They are extremely hardy and even if they suffer damage from the cold they will bounce right back

LOl. You are a good salesperson. It is a done deal as soon as I read some and then locate one. LOL

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Oh, since moving to Florida, these have become a favorite of mine......didn't get any new this year.

Last year, the freeze got them, but I have 16 new ones coming up.....

Don't know the name; just enjoy their beauty!

Eclipse,
I'm not sure what that one is, It could be a Sharonii?? Maybe I should post it in the Identification forum.
Kevin......I love that hel., is it a rostrata trying to turn itself back around?
Kell, like kdiggler said, frost can occur but we hardly ever get them here in south Pinellas county, I'm right on the zone 10 border I've seem a slight frost once.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I hadn't even noticed that it was Kyle had posted one. A beauty too. My eyes were on the pictures. Dwarf sounds good to me too. I was just thinking of you tonight Kyle, as I was looking at 2 darling alocasias that are looking now like school age size. LOL.

So many plants and so little time.

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Ric, Your right it is a rostrata bending all crazy. They're blooming like crazy right now. I planted a bunch of different types last year and they're yet to bloom, I know it usually takes heliconias awhile to bloom when planted from rhizome. Do you know a way to speed it up a little? What type of fertilizer do you use, and how often?? Thanks

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

kdigg.........I just started growing them a couple of years ago. My expirience is that it takes 2 to 3 years for the larger ones to get bloomin' from rhizome. I try to not use fertilizers and use mostly compost, coffee grinds and bone meal. Patience is the key....I guess lol. But its worth the wait.......the bloom is amazing and it last months. Let me know if you find a faster way to get these guys to put on a show.

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

I use a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season, as well as a rich organic blend, with bone meal as well along with a little black cow. It does take a long time but it definately is worth the wait!!

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

ricfl, I am green with envy. I have always wanted to be able to grow those beauties. They will come back in zone 8a but never bloom.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Mine are starting to bloom for the first time. I got them last year.
I have 'golden torch Adrian"
