I have had these for several years, and was about to give up on it blooming. I thought it wasn't getting enough sun. Glad I didn't give up on it!!!!

Finally!!!!!!!!
Well, for one, the palm behind it grew up a little and didn't give it as much shade as it has the past couple of years. Two, we have a dollar weed problem in our area(sandy soil), and the lily of the nile do not like to have their roots disturbed, so I made sure that I kept the weeds away as to not disturb the roots!!
I think between the two it helped tremendously this year!! Hope this helps you!!
Janet
what did you do to get rid of your dollar weed?
ely...
Still have tons of it, just don't let it get near my lillies!!
Janet is it beautiful
LOL Larry it is impossible to get rid of dollarweeds around here because of the damp conditions. That Scotts Bonus S is the best for keeping it under controll but it is very expensive. Tim got some this year because it was so bad in the bog area. It grows all up in my potted plants too.
I think I looked at the scotts bonus s and I am scared to use it cause if it kills a weed what will it do to your plants?.?.?.?
ely
it might have been orthro?
ely
Thanks Donna. We have a little more control on the dollar weed this year. I stopped using Bonus S, switched to Weed Stop, or somthing like that by Spectracide. I think Weed "n Feed fed the weeds!! LOL!!!! They are not as bad in the lawn this year anyway. Almost impossible in the flower beds, just pulling them by hand!!
Janet
If it is getting enough sun, and other plants are not crowding it to the point of disturbing the roots, I would leave it alone. If you feel you must move it, make sure you dig a big hole, probably several inches past the foliage(depending on the size of the plant), and hopefully you won't disturb the roots very much by digging far enough away from them.
Janet
I've grown it too and never saw blooms. :( Has anyone grown it in a pot, taken it in for a long winter, and had it bloom?
edited to say Congratulations Janet......I was soooo amazed to see that someone got blooms! ;)

Really??? They are blooming all over town here, I thought I was the dummy who didn't know how to grow them!! LOL!!!!! I guess I have had these for about 5 years total, in a pot for 2, where they bloomed their heads off, one of them had 9 blooms at one time, so I thought I should plant them, then, wait for 3 years to get it to bloom again.
Good luck with yours!!
Janet
I hate that everyone else has dollar weed to. It is the bain of my existence. In the 30 some years I have lived at this location, I know I have pulled a ton of that #&%*#%&&%# WEED. I can't believe that it is actually sold in garden catalogs as a ground cover. I think it is a mini kudzu.
Look at this ground cover and see if anyone knows what it is. I made the mistake of planting it in one of my beds-like the contrast. It is highly invasive and I am struggling to get rid of it.
Looks like goutweed to me: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/323705/ I've got it growing where nothing else will and it can't spread to the rest of the yard.
I like the looks but would need to build the Berlin wall to keep it contained in our moist and hot weather.
Thanks for the ID.
Yours are lovely! Some of mine bloomed wonderfully but one lasted only a week before losing it's petals. I'm not quite sure where I went wrong with it but it gets less sun so maybe that's it. I'm hoping they'll bloom again for me!
You cut off the bloom stalks as low as you can right? Any tips on that for a newbie like me?
Jen,
I let mine fade down until they dry out and fall over, then cut them away. Just like other lillies to send the energy back to the bulb.
Janet
i thought i read somewhere that agapanthus grow and flower best in overcrowded pots or am i dreaming that?
Thanks, Janet!
Oh, and I read that too, trackinsand.
Agapanthus like to be crowded, that is why they grow so well in a pot. In fact, do not divide them very much. Mine have bloomed every year . I have had them about four years. Al;so, they like lots of fertilizer and mulch and well drained. I like the big dark blue one (Elaine, maybe), but really, I love them all. I cut off the spent flower. The flower sometimes lasts a long time, sometimes just a few days, depending on the weather, I think and the amount of water. I like even the little Peter Pam. In the middle of my bed, there is a white one, bought by accident. I think I read that in some parts of California, they reseed all over the place and have to be pulled up.
Mine have been blooming since I planted them four years ago. Divided this year and put some in pots and they bloomed in the pot. I think location is everything. Some are in wet clay and some in very dry ground and both are blooming.
Nice to see all you Mississippi folks and others too, of course.
Hey Ruba!! I want to divide mine, and they are about four years old, too, so it should be okay to divide?
I've got "Elaine", but it didn't bloom in a pot this year, so I put it in the ground....probably disturbed it at the wrong time, so it didn't bloom there either. Roz, how much sun is yours getting? I'm not too far from you. I think my main problem with the smaller ones is being too wet. (However, we go back and forth between being a desert and being a swamp......good ole Mississippi!)
Mine is in full sun, and I don't think it likes wet feet. Probably will hate the storms coming our way!
I looked at this lovely picture with envy! Very nice! I had sown a couple of seeds that I got from a trade, but :(, it did not come up at all. I so much wanted to see it grow here but that still remains a dream.
