I planted some Bronze Fennel for the first time this year. I put plants in one herb garden and some seeds on a border. The plants I purchased said they were perennial but the seeds said they were an annual. They are both Foeniculum vulgare. I thought I would look in my herb and gardening books but it is the same dilema - some say perennial some say annual. Does anyone know which it is? I am in zone 5/6.
Thanks.
Question About Bronze Fennel
Can't say for zone 5-6, I'm in the UK, but our fennels, bronze and ordinary are perennial if I cut the flowers. Everytime I've let it seed, not only have I lost the plant but the seedlings never appear either LOL oh well cutting the flower is a good compromise.
newt: I am in zone 5, too. Fennel is not hardy here. We treat as an annual. But it will reseed itself. Isn't it beautiful, love to see it sway in the wind.
mine came back this year-smells like licorice!
zone six barely!
Mine came back too, and I live in zone 4....I had just planted last year, though, and it hadn't flowered in 2000.
I bought one about a month ago from the Tailgate Market here.... the local grower said they are perennial here in Zone 6. The one I planted 2 years ago didn't survive the winter... and not certain it even flowered.
