Hi all :) I saw some beautiful red tulips in the neighborhood on May 19th this year. They were the latest ones I saw anywhere and I'd really like to get some tulips that will bloom relatively late... anytime in May would be fantastic. I'm not even picky about the color, just want some tulips late in the spring :) I just planted the perennial bed this spring and will be planting daffs, allium, and tulips this fall. May, in particular, is kinda a skimpy month in the front yard and I need the tulips for pep! :) So, any suggestions??? Thanks!!!
Huga
Help me pick a tulip?
Huga--have a look in Scheepers and Brent and Becky's catalogs...
Here are some late spring Tulip suggestions from B&B: http://www.brentandbeckysbulbs.com/spring/search/search.php?fromsku=02-0712§ion=floweringtime&criteria=latespring&page=12
and Scheepers'/Van Engelens link:

They usually tell what is early, mid season and late...
They helped me a lot in choosing a range of bulbs that bloomed from March through May. Didn't plant tulips in the ground, though, because of 'the critters' here. Only in pots.
Good luck. t.
Thanks so much, Judy :) I had looked at B & B's but hadn't been able to locate the "late" tulips. Kingsblood looks like the tulips I saw around here this May, beautiful! Not too keen on the name, but oh well! :) Thanks a ton, I should be able to find the type of thing I'm looking for there.
Jacci :)
I think peony tulips are so pretty but I am not sure how late they bloom.
I added a few clumps of tulips last fall for May blooming.
A pale pink double 'Angelique'
A few different parrots--apricot, black, and 'Rococo'
They began blooming 5/19-5/24 and I think would have opened a bit sooner but it was cool and rainy most of the month.
All in all they made a great show and I will add more this year. The black parrots were nothing short of stunning!
The Darwin tulips (not Darwin Hybrids-those are crosses between Darwins and Emperors) and Cottage tulips have been combined into the same class, Single late tulips, and they are May blooming. I've grown 'Sorbet' and it is beautiful, tall, and late. The lily flowered tulips are late bloomers and are very graceful on tall, swaying stems-really nice. The peony flowered tulips are another late blooming option. I have some purple ones (don't know the name, they were mislabled) that have perennielized well and have bloomed well for 4 or 5 years now. Happy shopping! Neal.
My latest bloomers are Maureen (tall white) and Dordogne (kind of a peach/orange/rose blend) also tall. I think these are both darwins which is what I plan to concentrate on from now on. They keep growing for years, although I have been digging mine up in the summer so they will stay dry. The new one I tried this year is just gaspingly lovely - Cream Jewel - very large flowers and so nice with all the greens of spring. Speaking of spring green, that is a nice one too...Oh I love tulips! Just wish I could get my marking system more organized so i am not always forgetting where I planted them...
I think my favorite tulip is Princess Irene. But she would be too early. Negrita is a really beautiful dark purple late tulip.
