Boulderwood in Halifax

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

On my recent trip to Nova Scotia I visited Boulderwood, a subdivision in the west end of Halifax. The property was once owned by Capt. Dick Steele, one of the foremost rhododendron hybridizers in Canada. He sold the land, which was later converted into a cul-du-sac. The houses were build around the rhodys. I hit the peak display. Here's a few pics. This is me standing in one of the driveways.

The pink one is over 20 feet tall!

'Blue Peter', perhaps my favourite one from the area.

'Calsap', another striking hybrid from the collection.

I'm not sure if my buddy was wearing shades due to the sun or the rhody display!

Great rhodo pix. I'm surprised they grow that big in Halifax. My Mom grows them in Saint John, NB but they don't get that big. Maybe Halifax is a bit warmer.

We grown monster ones on the West Coast. They're mostly finished now.

Look at those Rhodys! The are magnificent. One of my favourite shrubs. I can't believe it will be a whole nother year before we see those blossoms again here in B.C. :'(
