I just bought a Mrs. Perry Slocum lotus tuber on ebay. I'm wondering how deep of water this plant should be it....or can be in? One place I read said no deeper than 12 inches. It also said that the first leaves will float on the water like a water lily, until the root sytem is big enough to send the leaves upright out of the water. Jenny

IH again, you'll love Mrs. Perry D, she's a beauty! Lotus in zone 5 should be planted in a deep dirt bog. If you want it to winter over successfully, dig it 3' deep and and 3' wide, or larger. Anything less than that may compromise the lotus. Put the liner in then fill it back up with dirt and add water. You should have2 to 4" of standing water on top of the dirt. Lay the tuber on top of the dirt and put a rock on it to hold it in place. It will take off in no time and should bloom for you this year.
Neat! Thanks for the info. Jenny
branka, that is just beautiful! How much below the water level to you keep your lotus? And do you leave it just like that for winter, or sink it further? Thanks so much! Jenny
Make sure you use a biiiig pot. This lotus acts like its on steroids. lol
Yeah I figrued that out pretty quick. I figured this tuber would be a couple inches long....well.....I got it today, and it's 12" long. LOL The directions say a 7-20 gal container. Jenny
The first year I got it the tuber had 6 or 7 growing tips. The next spring I got 8 plants out of it.
Wow! I don't think I knew quite what I was getting into when I bought this. LOL Jenny
