Our recently purchased house come with a small preformed pond and waterfall. It is in the middle of the yard and not incorated into the landscape. The waterfall makes it seem out of place. The waterfall is just sitting on a hill of dirt with nothing planted behind it. Grass and various weeds grow around the edge of the pond--not very attractive. Anyhow, I'm considering moving it to a corner of the yard so that it will blend into the landscape more naturally. The only problem is that the only possible location is shady, below a small redbud tree. Is it advisable to locate a pond in the shade? I'm new at this, so any advice (to move or not to move) would be appreciated.
water gardening in shade
Hi Sydney,
I have two ponds, one in full sun and one in shade and one does just as well as the other. The one in the shade is growing under a large black walnut tree so gets sun only in the early hours of the morning. The plants I have in the shady is an Arrowhead, a pond lily (Nuphar lutea), waterlilies Marliacea Carnea and Marliacea Albida (bloom in part shade), fairy moss, water lettuce, Water iris and cattails. I have it surrounded by Hostas, Ribbon grass, ferns, sweet woodruff, etc. I will post a picture but I just trimmed the old blooms off the lilies and the plants have not filled in from dividing but you will get an idea. Good luck!
