Here's my problem -- I have several plants in the garden I want to save seed from (or pull when it comes to the oreintal lilies). BUT -- I don't want them to set seed right now- so I have been deadheading. What do you all use to mark a plant? I will NEVER remember them all once the blooms are done. I need some kind of tag to put ON the plant (sortof like a twist tie or those yellow trash bag tie things) that will last, that I can write on, so I can save seed when it comes time.
Any suggestions? I am also puttin this in proigation and bulbs -- to get a wider range of views.
Thanks!!!!
Heather
How do you mark plants for seed saving?
Heather,
Check Dmail.
Old, cut up plastic venetian blinds work well with twist ties. Cut them like those round tipped plant tags like they sell in the stores, poke holes through the point part at the rounded tip. Use the twist ties to secure to them to the plants.

Heather,
You could get some of that ribbon, I call it the ribbon or tape that the contractor use to mark off areas. It comes in a roll, many colors, and is at like a farm store. Is easy to tear off just want you need. You can just tie it to the base of the plant and you will see it in the fall easily.
Just my idea. Hope you understand what I am talking about. I have used it in the field for forestry and also here at the research farm I work at to mark things (tie on).

Daisy and Robin-- great ideas!! I don't have twist ties unfortuanely but that gives me a great idea on what to do with leftover cross stich floss.... no farm stores around (that I can think of) deep in suburbia here but I bet Home depot or lowes may have something like it.. THANKS!!!!

Do you have left over Christmas ribbon?
Colored Yarn?

Geez, I have been racking my brain for the name and it is flagging. That is what I wanted to say. Ask at Lowe's or HD and they will have lots, I am sure.
Robin,
Those are good ideas but will get icky in the rain and being watered. That is why the ribbon I was talking about is plastic, waterproofed, and still colorful to see later.
Just my 2bits.

Lowes and HD both carry light weight wire in small rolls that you can cut to the desired size. You can also use copper wiring on the roll. I also use the plastic mini blinds and cut them into 5-6 inch lengths. I stack several together and drill a hole in one end.
Super cheap and gave for recycling.
Jan...
How about florist's tape and a sharpie? Sticks to itself and is meant to get wet..
