I'm new to ponding and just had two of my wild lillies, gathered from a local river, bloom. I keep reading about lily seeds. Where are they? Is there something left containing seeds after the bloom has died? Also, I was told that almost all wild lillies are cow lilies and have yellow blooms. One of my wild lillies put out a pink bloom. Any ideas on what it might be?
Lily Question??
The so called wild lilies with the yuckey yellow bloom are not lilies .They are Spadderdock. As for lily seed, I think the flower has to mature, then it sinks below the surface . Not sure if it comes back to the surface ,but some time in there it becomes viable seed.
Actually, the yellow bloom is gorgeous...it has opened up looking like the lily pics I've seen. But then again, maybe I'm just real proud to have found them. It took me 5 trips up and down a 27 mile stretch of river before I finally found the little cove they were in. I waded mid thigh in stagnant, smelly water with silt halfway to my knees to retrieve some. I could have driven 38 miles to the nearest nursery who sells water lilies for $35 a pot, but I doubt that I would be any prouder of a store bought plant than I am of the ones I actually dug up, brought home and planted myslf.
Way to go.

You created a memory that will always be with you. If you had purchased one the memory would have died when the plant died.
Thanks guys! I live in the middle of the Chihuahua Desert where most of the landscape is just various shades of brown. We thing ANYTHING that blooms is beautiful..even the weeds!!
I wasent saying YOUR lily is one of the yucky cowlily's, what I was trying to say is that the yucky cow lilies are spadderdock. If yours are pretty than chances are they are not spadderdock, and as far as I know there are white and yellows in the wild, probaby more.they had to start somewhere. Good luck with the ones you have.
