I picked these from the garden yesterday Texas Rose (Lisianthus 'Balboa Blue')
The red rose was from my DH (store bought)
There's a rose and then there is a Texas Rose
wow. don't know what to say. gorgeous.
Are you serious? Those roses really grew that color? I had no idea there were roses that color! Very striking!
Maggie, it's a lisianthus. The wild ones are native here, I picked seeds today in an overgrown yard. No water on it in months and it was blooming it's little heart out.
Ahhhh.... Now i notice the foliage. I remember someone was looking for this earlier this year. Doesn't it have another latin sounding name besides lisianthus?
Suzi, do you have photos of the wild lisianthus?
Those are beautiful! I believe I need some!
WOW.. I think I need that too... that's my color!!
Beautiful! And they look so much like roses. I would love to see a picture of the plant in your garden!
Bettydee, I will try to remember to go back and take a picture. The house is empty.
ME have to have one!
WOW.............that is just absolutely gorgeous!!! Wish I had one......
I want one too!! That is stunning.
Ooooh, that is so pretty---please post more pic's of the plant and all. The color is so vibrant----gini
Wow, that's much prettier that the ones I have growing in my garden. Is it the variety or is it the conditions you have yours growing in? Can you describe what you do?
Anyone that has a Calloway's near them, might check there. I was at the one and McKinney yesterday and they had a few colors of Lisianthus. I was there to find a replacement for my Periwinkle that has croaked, and it was tempting to buy, but I did not want to be watering it everyday.
Staci,
You saw a double one like this one at Calloway's? The one at the top of this thread is a double, right? I have some dark purple Lisianthus but they are a single flower. Unless my eyes deceive me, this one looks like a rose. I may just have to run to Calloway's at lunch. :-)
Well, no I think they were singles, so don't run quite yet. Sorry, to get any one's hopes up!
That's okay. I should not be buying anymore plants this year anyway. :-)
Hi all,
Sorry haven't been on in a few days just so busy. This is my first year opening a gardening center and it's a lot of work by yourself. I usually just sell bare root perennials via mail order. (Dee's Gardens) Sonia did a co-op through DG. I do sell the lisianthus and have a few left so if you are interested you can contact me.
They are the doubles. I have another one that is white with purple on the edges that is really beautiful too. I will post a picture of the full plant as soon as my DH returns from his trip with the camera.
Sugarfoot--these actually were planted in a area that has rather poor soil and on the sandy side. They are a bit drought tolerant.
Dee
Hi Dee! I didn't know that was you. :-)
I have planted some lisianthus this year. Can you tell me your experience with cold hardiness?
Terrie
Hi Terri,
Yes it is me. I somehow just thought everyone would know the association of Bareroots and Dee's Gardens. Maybe it says so under my profile. Can you tell I am new to this.
Anyway the ones I took the picture of, I have had for 3 years. They are suppose to be hardy to Zone 7, though if we have a very cold winter they may not survive. I found as long as the temperatures don't stay below 20 for more than 4-5 nights they pull through. It's when you get a whole week where it is below 20 everynight and never gets much warmer during the day. I consider them a tender perennial for Zone 7.
BTW Sonia told me to look up your pictures of your yard when I joined. I think you should be the one in the Gardening business not I. Very impressive.
Dee
Thank you, Dee! A compliment like that really means a lot coming from you. I'll send you an email tomorrow regarding the double lisianthus. I am about out of room until I get another bed cleaned out but I would love to have some of double for my Mom. She can always share with me next year. :-)
Hi Dee,
So great to see you on here. How is business going?
I would love to have one of the lisianthus. Those are beautiful. You know purple is my favorite color!
I'll give you a call.
Sonnia
Maggiemoo, you asked about the Latin name. It is Eustoma grandiflora, and I've added it to my "gotta have" list. It's featured today in our newspaper's garden section under the heading Texas bluebell.
I grew it last year but, it must have winter killed. This time it will be mulched. Mine were blue singles. Will be going to Dee's Garden today and buy some of her purple doubles. :-)
John
Looking forward to meeting you John. I like the double as I think they look a lot more like a rose.
Hi Sunshine---will wait to hear from you.
We had rain yesterday morning,(thank goodness) and of course wind too. I lost another branch of the lisianthus that has 13 open flowers on it and 7 buds. I knew I should of staked it. For some reason this year it has grown taller than ever. I usually don't stake them. Wish I had to camera to take another picture.
John, did you make it up to Dee's place? Hope all of you had a wonderful holiday!
Sure did! She has great looking plants and I'm betting a quality business!
We had a quiet 4th except for my lab, Butch. Fireworks scare the bejabbers out of the poor guy.
Poor Butch. Have to get him some ear plugs. lol
He's much better today. Btw, bought some swamp milkweed, too. They are big beautiful plants. Can't wait to see the flowers. Of course I am hoping the monarch cats enjoy them, as much as me. Which reminds me, I have to email Sandy and let her know I have her plants. (picked some up for her at Dee Dee's).
Congrats on the swamp milkweed, John! Bet they are beautiful. :-)
