Gunnera??

North Saanich, Canada

Is there anyone out there who grows gunnera???? This is the second year we have tried and number 2 has now died. I am going to show you a couple of pictures of the area where we planted it. Our property borders on a slough, and the slough turns into a stream that goes through our yard during the winter, and pretty well dries up in the summer. The area close to the edge is always very wet and spongy . We were told to plant with the crown above the soil. It gets some day sun, but probably only until about noon.
Thanks for your help.

Yours looks so sad..
mine is shaded by the fence, doesn't get that much sun , maybe a bit in the evening, as I have a daylily planted, beside it..
I find that they do like allot of water,, so hopefully mine makes it thru the summer..
I did see it growing in another garden last summer and this feloow had wintered it over,,his was in the very deep shade..
Pam look for a really shady spot and move it there,,
feed it ..
I use my pond water to feed allot of my plants..
we have a filter system for the pond and hubby cleans the sponge like filter in pails of water and I use this gray water to feed my hostas and other plants.. they do just great with this..

Glenda, we were in Parksville over the weekend, and spotted this monster. It's under a tree, on the side of a big pond and is very happy as you can see. I must've been a good 3' across if not more.

Linda, we were out to Twinpeaks Nursery today and bought a new gunnera. She said she had no idea why the other one would have died so quickly, like within 24 hours of planting it. So we are going to slowly introduce this one, actually putting the pot in the ground first and see what happens. The first sign of any wilting or brown, it will be coming out. This plant is a lot bigger and stronger, with larger leaves, so cross your fingers!!!! The lady at the nursery wonders if there is something in the water, but everything else around there is growing fine, so I can't imagine it is the water. Maybe we just had 2 duds of gunnera!!! LOL

You know what they say, Glenda. Three times a charm! :D

That is some size you saw in Parksville, Linda. My neighbor down the street has one growing in her North exposure front yard. It's lovely and healthy looking, but only half the size you saw.

Was your weather as nice on the Island today as we had in the Interior? Had a high of 35C here in Castlegar. It was lovely. I swear I could hear my tomatoes, peppers, cukes and corn singing out there in my garden. :) Thuinderstorms in the forecast tonight with cooler weather tomorrow. Drats!

Donna, we had a nice morning, but it turned cloudy, then we even had thunder!! Almost unheard of here. Then a pile of rain. Still cloudy.
Yesterday was great though!!

I guess we have to take the good with the bad, huh. Apparently there is some kinda system coming up the coast that will be effecting us all.

This weather had better get it's act together, 'cause today is the first day of summer! Woo Hoo!

I grow my gunnera on the north side of my house in a shady, cool spot where the downspout comes off of the roof. It's not in water, but I do know of people growing their gunnera submerged in water like the ones at Butchart Gardens in Victoria (which are ENORMOUS). By the way the ones in Victoria are growing in full sun and doing very well. Maybe they like cold feet? I remember some planted outside of the Vancouver Weston that were in full sun as well, though they were not in water. There were several other plants shading their base, so maybe that's the key?

Mine appears to be happy and produces several large leaves, though they are sometimes covered with slug holes!

Thank you so much for the information Gale Ü ......... I'll compromise (with yours and Wilma's suggestions) and put mine in the corner of a pond that gets afternoon shade. Maybe now that we are out of the high nineties and hundreds mine will look much happier. My pond water sure wasn't supplying *cold feet* conditions! ;)
