New Iberia, LA

My weekly spraying yesterday I noticed seed pods .Sum have very long ones too.So I would like to know a little information about how to go about collecting seeds and growing from seeds.
TIA.

Hi Dianne...first of all, you need patience and LOTS of room!!

OK...this is how I do it...there are other ways, too... I close the pod as it seems to be getting full but still green with tape so when it POPS open, the seeds don't fly off (they have very light fuzz, like dandilions). Then I have a flat of moist light mix and I try to spread the fuzz and the seeds over it....and cover the flat with Saran Wrap or equivalent...allowing some of the moisture to escape. Within a few days you will see little green sprouts. I take off the covering and let them grow. When they are still small (perhaps their first set of real leaves) I take the best 10 or 20 and transplant them to individual pots. Then when potting up more, I eliminate the not so healthy ones...so I am left with perhaps 5 to 10. These I grow out to see the flowers. I get so tired of the process (and I run out of room)that I usually just keep 3 or 4.

What fun!!! Do you know what the crosses are?

CAUTION - please - if you share the seedlings, please don't give them the same name as the pod parent....and make sure they are always ID'd as seedlings..... ;>)

Dianne,
I received some hoya seed in a trade last year, but they did not germinate. I was told you need fresh seed for germination.

I have known people to have good luck sowing small seeds in a jar with moist soil and screwing the lid on and off for ventilation.

It's worth a try.
