Nursery excursion in Texas

Houston, TX

Hello Everyone! I am a new member and happen to find you thru a person that called into a radio station I was listening to this past Sat. am. She was on her way to meet fellow members to tour nurseries in SanAntonio, Texas. WHAT A GREAT IDEA! How do I join in? I have some favorite spots along Interstate 10 I would like to share..Great hideaway nurseries that are jewels..Thanks Jo

Hi Jo,

Welcome to DG! The member you heard on the radio was maggiemoo. She told me yesterday about how she was talking about the site and our get-togethers on the radio in Houston. How exciting to see that someone actually found there way here as a result!!

best,
dave

Welcome to the garden, Jo!!

I'm so glad you were listening yesterday, and found us! We had a great time in San Antonio yesterday, be sure to check out the thread as we recuperate :-) and start posting. Pictures will be along soon. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/515327/

We're doing this again in Austin next month, July 16th: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/519305/

As I said to Sean Kelly yesterday, we'll have to do one of these in Houston. Did you hear him say that we can come and tour their gardens? I would love to hear about the "jewels" you mentioned. When do you think would be a good time to have a Houston Nursery Date? I've been thinking of hunkering down close to the AC in August, only venturing out long enough to keep the plants alive, lol. Sept and Oct are actually pretty good times in the Houston area for planting, so maybe one of those months would work. We have a lot of members in Houston, we should be able to get a good group together.

November 12th we're having the Central TX RoundUp: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/515913/ RoundUps are when members get together for a day of meeting face-to-face, visiting, exchanging plants/cuttings/seeds, having a meal or two together, and just enjoying being in the company of fellow gardeners. Donna (dstartz) and her husband Ernest hosted one in the Spring, and have asked us back for more! They have some land in Kerrville with a beautiful view. In the Spring RoundUp some people camped at their place, some stayed in local motels, and some made it a day trip. It was the first time I'd been to one, and the first time I got to meet any of the friends I had made here, in the garden. It was so much fun, we just couldn't wait for another RU to get together again!

Im so glad to meet you, hope we can do a face-to-face sometime soon!

Hi Jo,

Welcome to Dave's Garden!

I was just talking to Maggie/Buffy/Mary ;-> yesterday about doing a 'nursery date' in Houston. Would you be willing to take that bull by the horns and find some outstanding nurseries for us all to visit in Sept or Oct?

Also, I hope you'll think about joining us for the Austin 'nursery date', as well as the Central Texas Round Up.

Until then I'll look for you around 'the garden',

Donna/dstartz

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Jo, welcome to DG. It is so great that you heard about us by listening to Maggiemoo on the radio in Houston. Like Dave said, she had told us about her conversation with the radio host yesterday. She must have done a really wonderful job. We're looking forward to visiting with you here and hopefully in person sometime. If you have any questions about navigating this site or any other questions just ask. A Houston nursery cruise would be fun.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Jo, welcome to Dave's Garden. Mary told us about her call yesterday. A Houston nursery get together would be great. Have you been to Tea's Nursery in Belaire?

Meadows Place, TX(Zone 9a)

Welcome to the plant asylum, Jo. What can I say but in the words of Ed McMahan, "EVERYTHING you need to know" or want to find out about plants, you'll find it here. I'm sure you will make some great friends here as I have. (excluding Donna) that's a cut, dear. ;o)

luv you all

Houston, TX

Geez, what a great welcome..Thank you everyone. I am so excited about all of this!. Plant and animal lovers are such special people.

I have only been living in Houston since Oct.2004. Moved from 3 acres in Santa Fe, TEXAS,to a home with a small backyard. So everything is in a slow progressive mode. I love it! Like an artist's empty palette! I have exotic birds so an aviary is top billing. Tues. I will start construction with friends. and on the other off the side yard I am digging a hole to sink a blk plastic 125 gal. pond from HomeDepot. Yard is small but I must have a water feature....

What plants do I grow? I would answer..what plants dont I grow. lol. Some I grow well and some I will never give up trying to grow.. I still have two greenhouse tables of plants in Santa Fe. I had a formal front yard before but Oh boy, my backyard was where I collected all the oddities, Texas natives, and favorites..I have a big collection of Begonias, Cactus & Succullents, Euphorbia's, Bromeliads, Hibiscus, Hoya's, Cycads, and Crinums. Before I moved, I tried to take cuttings or seeds from those I couldnt transport because of growth..When am I going to learn IT AINT GONNA ALL FIT. lol..It's like my antiqueING. Why do I continue to go to those places and look. I dont have room for a single thing..OK, have I totally revealed that I am crazy??..lol So, enough of "I's in a paragraph.

What a wonderful, user friendly, informative website.. Just so glad to be here.

Sean Kelly came out to the house and leveled the backyard and fixed my French drains. He is a wonderful person and yes, I have seen his place and we must go. He and his staff are just great people.

Been to Tea's alot. A couple of places in the Heights are great and of course, Donoho's and Cornelius too!
Anybody been to Nelson Water Garden's off I10, near Fry's Road? Thats another good one.
Darrell Duntan's Living Desert off 71 in Austin is a good place. Cactus Corral in Welder, Schultz's (there are two of those on either side of I10 headed west before you get to San Antonio exits, 599 and the other off of exit 610. Paul's Desert Garden in Schertz is another for those interested in cactus and succulents. Isn't it great sharing????

Must get ready for work!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Welcome JoT, It is so great you made a note of Maggiemoo's comment on DG on the radio, and found your way here and joined us. You will be so happy you did. We have a great and active member who lives in Santa Fe too. Trois and his wife have joined us at the CTXRU in Kerrvill this spring, and he is a very knowledgeable and prolific gardener. It sounds like you are a plant lover also, and we will enjoy hearing about your yard adventures. I sign off my notes with SEEYA, and I am Margie, aka Queen of Dirtland. LOL Great to meetcha.

The others I don't knowThere is a palms nurseryout 45S past nasa road 1that that time of year is 70 % off. All the Houston Garden centers should be 70% off,

Houston, TX

Hey BettyDee, Love that view on Monument Hill. Your in another great place in Texas..Found my first crested cactus in LaGrange while roaming in the boonies. Just love that bread and kaloches.

Ilovejesus, (me too) ever travel to Maa's Nursery on Toddville Road across bridge from Kemah in Seabrook? Great hugh place, kinda pricey but a neat place...

If anyone is into DayLilies. Alvin has a wonderful garden to tour.

I have two hugh Oleanders I trimmed into see thru bouquets (security reason) but keeping those new suckers frin growing on the bottom is a chore. Would painting them with that black pruning oil help or stop that?

Are ya'll sure about the July 16th and November 12th dates? I will mark my work calendar not to work those days...asca (excuse me...that was my kitty (MeMe) lol.

Yep! Sat, July 16th - Austin. The weekend of Nov 12th - Kerrville.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Welcome JoT. Teas Nursery brings back memories. I used to live in Bellaire and went to Faith Lutheran Church near Teas. Teas was my Mom's favorite nursery. I have one of the roses she bought there. My Dad dug it up before he sold the house and we transplanted it up here in Fredericksburg.

I'm glad you found your home here at DG!

San Augustine, TX(Zone 8b)

Another big welcome JoT! Boy, y'all are bringing back some memories! I lived in Houston until I moved here in 1998. Teas, Cornelius & Donoho's. wow! I haven't been there in YEARS! I'm sure I could get away for a Houston trip, I would love to meet everyone in person!

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, that would be so great! Please do "come on down!" (as they say on The Price Is Right)!!

Be sure to check out the Houston Nursery Date thread, it can be found in the first post on the very first thread (the "sticky" thread.)
