English Cucumbers

Toronto, Canada

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum.
On impulse on Saturday at the St. Lawrence Market I bought 2 English cucumber plants. I live in downtown Toronto in a condo 18 floors up, with a balcony facing west, lots of sun, from 12:45 until sunset. I planted them in my biggest planter in which last year I grew Bonnie Best tomatos. Then last night there was this big storm, the wind was fierce, the balcony furniture was blown to the south end in a jumble crushing a blue Jacob's Ladder. The other plants, mostly herbs and snapdragons came through okay, even the morning glorys were still there.
My question:
Will the cucumbers cling enough to fend off the wind or should they be tied in some way.

Hey bif! Welcome to Dave's Canadian Gardening Forum! You'll meet people from all over Canada here, and even some 'Murricans drop by now and then.

I live just outside Toronto, but work in downtown TO, likely in your neighbourhood.

If I was you, I'd tie those cucumber vines to some kind of support, to prevent it from being blown around. As you've figured out, the wind is mighty strong at 18 floors up! Heck, in downtown TO, its mighty strong on the ground level with all those office towers to create wind tunnels!

So, you have a good variety of stuff growing on your balcony. Do you also have any house plants?

I live in a townhouse and have a few small garden beds outside. I also have a terrace above my garage that I like to fill with annuals in the summer. But, my first love and most lasting, is tropical house plants - I have more than 100. This is a picture of my favourite corner in my living room.

Do you have a digital camera Bif? We love to share pictures of our growing treasures here ... as you can see ... lol.

Welcome Bif :)

I'd stake those cukes for sure. I stake mine each year cause they do need support even without the wind, I find. Sounds like you have the type of growing conditions, with the amount of Sun, that cukes thrive in. Good Luck with them. Hope you'll take some photos of your Balcony garden and share them with us. We'd love to see.

Christine, love your Indoor Jungle. Very lush looking. :Donna

Hi Bif:

I can only second all the advice given and second the request for pics, and second the welcoming wishes.

Hang out some - this is a great place.
