pics of the past week

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

I've been playing with the camera lately, after being so envious of Todd's, I thought I better see what my camera can do, if tested.

This is of a Rosamond brugmansia, about to open, with a hitchhiker.

my neighbours darc. vulgaris. It was about 3' long and not stinky at this point. He was so excited to see it bloom, he came over and asked me out to see it.

Linda, your mobisu x arborea looks great. Love the rest of the pictures too. Where were you camping with all the rabbits?

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Linda, your camera can compete with all of the big shot 8 mega pixels out there. The shots of your flowers were spectacular! I especially loved the mobisu x aborea brugmansia, poppy and the passiflora cerulea. You could put those ones in frames. Very nice. That sun was nice today, wasn't it? About time!

BTW, nice 5th wheel, spoiled lady! :D

Great pics Linda! I especially love your passiflora caerulea. I started some from seed this year and they're slowly growing for me. A long, long time away from flowering though!

I'm in love with your mobisu x aborea brugmansia Linda! Ü Gorgeous plants and pics.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Last night I was also graced with a bloom on an epi. It opened fully about 11PM so I didn't have to miss much of my beauty sleep!

OH WOW, that is spectacular, Linda!

Wow is right! Absolutely stunning!

I think I fell in love...
Does the mobisu x aborea brugmansia has a fragrance?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Quit teasing me Linda! ;)

Wow Linda! How long did you have to sit there to watch the epi open???

I was out smelling the mobisu x this evening, and could detect a very faint scent, was pleasent, but I can't describe it more than that, yet. It's quite small, only about 4-5" long, and the opening to the edge of the flower about 2", and seemed to fade in colour today.

The epi, I was suprised it opened so quickly, and early. It started around 5PM and was done around 10. The only other one I've seen started about 10:30, and I didn't stay up to see it in it's glory. I've heard so many people say they love the scent of these, but honestly, I can't say as I liked it's smell. Maybe it's an aquired thing...

There's another mobisu x going to bloom with in the week, and 2 more epi buds yet to flower, one in about 3-4 days.

ggd - I was out today and saw a stand of plants, I don't know what they are, but they have lovely large leaves, and I thought, hey, Glenda should look at these and try to cast them.

what a gorgeous Night-bloomin' Cereus, Linda! E

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

OK, I'll admit it, I am totally ignorant went it comes to Epi. Do they only bloom at night?

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Donna, there's very little I know about these. Pam, and my friend Judy, (that a few of you contacted about epi cuttings and bamboo) knows lots about them. I got this plant from Judy. This one does only bloom at night, and only lasts the one night.

this is another of Judy's, it bloomed at night and lasted about 3 days.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

This one, also of Judy's, bloomed over the course of about a week and 1/2. It was stunning.

here's what the whole plant of the last one looked like.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

You know, they remind me of Christmas Cactus. The difference between one that lasts one night, and another that lasts a week and half is what? Age of plant? And the one that lasts a week and a half, is that still just blooming at night?

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

I think, and I'm only assuming here, that the difference of lasting one night or one week, is the different species. They are all cacti, or succulents, even I don't know the difference there. The pink one, that had lots of flowers, stayed open day and night, as did the red epi.

Rosemary, you out there??? you know the answers? Anyone else?

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

here's the one opening tonight. it started about 8 and it's 10:15 now

this is from 9PM

The night blooming cereus (if I remember the name correctly) is the queen that lasts only one night. White blooming epis will last much longer.

The epi flowers vary in size but some can be 8 inches across. Much showier than the Easter and Christmas cactus (the plant however, when not in bloom, is much, much uglier....known to give children nightmares;) It is also more difficult than the holiday cactus to have bloom set on it. It needs very cool spring temps for that to occcur. California and BC spring temps are best suited for it's needs.

Your epi is gorgeous Linda!

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

thanks Pam, I'm trying my best to stay for it to be full bloom, as it is a night blooming cereus.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

this is it for the night, I can't stay awake any longer. It's just about in full bloom.

Lovely pictures Linda. Your night blooming cereus is gorgeous. Did you grow it from a cutting? Jeanne gave me some cuttings which are all growing. I'm just curious to know how long I might have to wait for some blooms of my own.

I love the mobisu x aborea brugmansia too. I have a bud opening on my peach x red sanguinea. I guess it will be pretty similar to that. How's your plant doing? Do you have any buds on it?

Sandy
