Just some pics from today!

North Saanich, Canada

Just thought I'd post a couple of pictures that I have taken today. We actually have sun!!! It's nice to be out in the warmth. We have had a lot of cool, rainy, windy, cloudy days lately.

I have finally finished with my cement gunnera leaves. It took a long time to actually get the leaf parts off, and there are still some small parts there, but I am done with picking!!!! I have not decided if I will paint them or not, but I think for now I will just leave them as is.

These are lasting a long time. Interesting that the orange ones opened long before the yellow.

Oops-posted the same pic twice!!!!

This is apic I took last year of a brugmansia cement leaf that I made. Looking forward to more this year, and also elephant ear leaves.

These are hydrangea cement leaves. In all likelihood, I won't be able to do any of these this year as the deer have taken to really liking my hydrangeas and they are in very sad shape.

OKay, enough for now. Must get outside and do some watering. Enjoy your day everyone!

Glenda, after being out to your place and seeing the gunnera leaves still with plant bits in them, you have done a LOT of work on those. They are wonderful. And wowser, the water lily is really beautiful.

Linda, I am sooooooo glad to be done with those leaves. It seems like it took forever, but I am very pleased with them. Now I can think about getting some other leaves done this summer and fall. One thing about it, these gunnera leaves take up a lot of space!!!

Hi GGD....the leaves are lovely. Do you make them for sale?

Great job on those cement leaves, Glenda. :)

Very pretty flowers Glenda. I just love the orange and yellow together. And I adore your water lily!

Well done Glenda. They all look lovely.

We use Hosta and Rhubarb leaves up here. We make them over a mound of sand so that you end up with a dish. Most are planted with hens and chicks, that kind of thing. We then plant contents in the garden and put the containers under cover for the winter.

Inanda with her first lily in bloom today. Finally !!!

My hearts breaking over your water lily Glenda.......it's gorgeous and I have a bit of a wait before I see them in my pond (the leaves of mine are just breaking the surface now).

Your leaf casts are fantastic and I will have to try that one of these days.

Thanks ladies. Solomon, I have never done enough cement leaves to try and sell any. I have only given them away as gifts. Inanada, I used hosta leaves before and like them too, although the hydrangea has better ribbing. They all turn out great though. It's odd when I'm at the nursery, I very often look at a plant with the idea of cement casting, instead of looking for a plant for its beauty!!!!!!! Lilypon, your waterlilies will be up and blooming in no time. Just wanted to give you a preview!!!

Too bad. If ever you decide you have too many and want to sell one (or two!),keep me in mind.

What kind of cement do you use?

North Saanich, Canada

I use portland cement. My mix uses 3 cups fine sand, 2 cups of portland cement, and enough water to make the consistency of toothpaste. I also use a strength additive, a powder that goes in with the dry ingredients at the beginning.

Beautiful leaves, I know picking the leaf bits out of the gunnerra leaf is very tedious. Last year I just left a couple sitting out in the rain most of the winter, and then hosed them off and most of it came off.
I m so surprized your lilies are blooming, mine were done ages ago. What type are they exactly? Thanks for sharing your pics.
Cindy
