My new shade garden...sort-of..;)

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8b)

I don't have much shade at my house...so as soon as these trees got big enough to provide at least a partial shade bed under them, I dug up that sod, and dug in a ton of compost, manure and alfalfa pellets...and here is the result...my first kind of shady bed...:o)

And a little different angle...Hostas, Hydrangea, coleous, anemone, dicentra,Heuchera, ferns.....many things growing well here that struggle in my sunny spots I have had to use before. Now some more trees need to get big...I want more shade!! LOL :o)

jamie--looks good so far! Waiting for shade can try your patience, but it looks like you are well on your way!

Yes, it seems like those who have sun want shade and those with shade want sun! Is that the nature of the gardener? I wonder. I feel the same...it's never quite right, whatever I've got growing! t.

Hi Tabasco~
Fancy meeting you here....and you are soooo right! My best friend, and gardening mentor when I first started on this path toplant obsession, has an AMAZING woodland/shade garden, and always wants more sun!! She gets to grow Trillium, Hosta (100's), Podaphylum, Anemones, Heucheras (many, many!), Hydrangea, Hellebores, Epimedium, etc., etc.......Her garden is amazing, I see new things, and learn new info about plants every time I visit there.

And what does she want???? More sun!! I think it is the nature of the gardener. I have so much sun here, and all I seem to be drawn to are shade plants.....soooo silly ;o)

Hi, jamie--

Well, truthfully, we have a nice mix--sun in the front and shade in the back...now I need lots of energy to tackle the project!

This is a pic of the shade garden I'm need to start work on (although it's too hot today to do anything)...(So far all I've done is buy the birdbath!)

I had some hostas planted here but 5 trees came down in a storm this month and landed on them...at least it gave us more light!

Have to pull the weeds, get some compost in, and make a plan. Lots of fun ahead. :-) t.

Nice little shade garden, Jamie! I like it!
And Tabasco...looks like a wonderful area for a shade garden. I can just see it with a path wandering through lots of hostas, astilbes, ferns, etc. Get busy!! LOL!

Hi there,

Tabasco - I love the spot you have to work with.....lots of potential...;o) I look forward to seeing your progress, please keep us posted with pics, etc....

Marcy_1 - Thank-you for the kind words....I have had a blast getting to know, and plant a whole new group of plants!! Until now it was always plants for full sun, now I am strolling a whole new section of nurseries - the "Shade Plants" section.......FUN!!

I'll second the "want more sun" plea. I actually have a lot of sun, just not where the garden beds are. Almost all of my beds are at least 1/2 shade. My spring project this year was to add a sun bed, by extending my shade bed out toward the back lawn. If I keep bying plants that I don't have enough sun for, I'm going to have to add another bed further out!
