Blooming on a cloudy day

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Good morning everyone. I finally dragged out the old camera to take a couple of tree pics. I love my trees even if my dh says they block his view of the water. Obviously, not a tree pic, peonies that got flopped over by the heavy rains.

This is a new Acer pseudoplatanus 'Eskimo Sunset'. I love the pink colour and the deep burgundy leaf reverse.

Another of my favourite trees. This is Cornus Kousa. It blooms after the leaves come out.

Not a great picture but this is Robinia pseudoacacia Frisia. It is a lovely chartreuse colour that brightens up our cloudy days. Wicked thorns though.

Another not very good pic, too dark, but this is Styrax japonica. It has thousands of small white hanging blooms.

The baptisia has been out for a couple of weeks now. I like the way it shows against the Kousa.

This is a new salvia for me, Hot Lips. It has small blooms that are quite showy. The slugs have taken a special interest in it.

Looking great Liz. I put my salvia "Hot Lips" in a planter, we'll see if the slugs find it or not. We have so many snakes this year, the slugs aren't too much of a problem.

That Eskimo Sunset is lovely. Sycamore maples grow like weeds here. I've seen the Leopoldii but its nothing compared to Eskimo Sunset....I'll have to keep an eye out for that one.

As usual Liz your yard is fantastic.......thank you soooooooo much for the lovely eye-candy (both plants and view;)!!!

Ahhh, a girl after my own heart. I love trees too. Yours are spectacular, Liz. Thanks for sharing.

P.S. The new Brugs are doing great! Climatizing well to our interior climate. :D

Thank you for your comments. When we moved here in 1989 there was nothing down there but blackberry bushes and weeds and big old cedars that were right up against the top floor deck. When the wind really blew you could feel the house move. So naturally they had to come out. It looked like scorched earth by the time I was finished clearing it. So I was able to start with a clean slate. Few things please me more in the garden than seeing birds in the trees that I've planted with my own hands.

Liz your grounds are lovely. You have such unique plants. The Cornus Kousa, is that also known (for us latin challenged folks) as a hanky tree? It's beautifull.

When we were in Comox this past weekend, we say many pink dogwood trees in bloom. I hadn't realised how nice they looked.

I think the hanky tree is the Styrax Linda. I could be wrong though. I'm not good with common names.
The Kousa is different from the local ones you see around. It blooms about a month later. Right now it's changing colour to bubblegum pink. The local ones bloom before the leaves, Kousa is the other way around.

Linda and Liz, don't quote me on this, but I believe what we call the hanky tree or dove tree is Davidia involucrata. Linda, if you have ever seen it, there is one at Butchart that we have seen once when it was in bloom. It is lovely. But I'm not sure if this is the one you are talking about.
