Gingers

N. Mississippi, MS(Zone 8a)

Sorry to post here but figured someone here could direct me to the proper forum. What forum should I use to ask questions about Ginger? I have never had one and curious as to why they seem so popular on here. Am I missing something?

SLG you sure are missing something if you are not growing any. They are wonderful low maintance plants that smell heavenly when blooming. Kay(gaylams) in Poplarville has the prettiest biggest ginger bed I have ever seen. We are not talking about eating ginger but Hedychiums, Costus, Curcumas etc.

her's some info

Ah, if only the gingers that grew around here were that lovely.....I do have one, there are a few others that will tolerate RI winter, but, not like that. I've been a good girl too, but my greenhouse dreams are far away.

slcdm - wow, those are awesome. Well, I see that joining DG has added yet another plant to my future addictions. Now I have to look into creating a few ginger beds. Ok, suggestions for a Ginger newbie anyone?

by the way - is there a ginger forum I am missing? I would like to read up on others experiences. Thanks

they Hedychiums, curcumas, and Zingibers come back fine for Kay in Zone 8a. The shell gingers will come back but will never see them bloom unless you grow in pot and over winter in GH. They bloom on year old growth. Just got mine planted before surgery so hope to see them bloom this year but the folage is worth growing them for even if you don't see blooms. They web site will tell you what zone they can be grown in. I think GingersRUs is the better site but couldn't fine it in my favorites last night lol.

Robin, Im going to owe you big time very, very soon. If you ever need anything.......

I've bought my first ginger, a Hedychium called 'Elizabeth'. I really want to do right by it and I'm not sure if there might be something wrong. It's leaves are curled up and it's not a very good green, more of a yellowish green. Don't know if it's supposed to be this way. I thought maybe it was getting too much sun, so I moved the pot to a more protected position, but the leaves still curl. Also, where i bought it they were growing it as a pond plant. It was planted in pure clay and in the water. I took it out of the pot and put it in the island in the middle of my stream. It's now planted in good soil with plenty of compost and composted manure. I was hoping this would help green it up. Any ideas from you experienced ginger people?
