light and fertilizer = blooms

Give the experts more information and I'm sure they can help you. I'm know just enough to ask questions!! (lol lol)

Are they in the ground or in pots?
If in the ground have you have your soil tested?
If in pots how long since you repotted?
What soil did you use?

How often to you fertilize and with what?

Do you have them in shade, partial shade or totally in the sun?

Respond and I'm sure someone with several years of experience will come by and tell you want to do.

Thanks, Judy! =) Mine are in pots.........one in an 8-10" pot, and the other newly transplanted into a 24". They're both in great, loose organic potting soil. I've added cow manure & epsom salts, and water ALL the time!! Each is under a crape myrtle, getting alot of sun, with only afternoon protective shade. I'm so frustrated........these guys are from cuttings that I got last year, and although they grow foliage like there's no tomorrow, no blooms. =(

Oh, and the manure & epsom is on top of the soil, so I only water.

I believe they need more food. Manure isn't enough, I'm guessing. I fertilize a couple of times a week if they are in pots, at least until they bloom the first time. I never use Epsom salts. If you got the cuttings last fall, they should be getting ready to make a Y shortly. The one in the 8-10 inch pot needs a bigger pot. If you are using composted manure, it should tell you how much nutrient they are getting. Right now, I'm feeding 15-5-15 and started the spring out with 20-20-20. I hope you see blooms soon. Right now I have a couple of fall cuttings that are blooming well. Still short, but blooming. Generally in Iowa, I don't get a lot of blooms until mid July.

Gosh, Brugie said just about everything. One question: Why don't you have them in the ground??

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Brugie, I can't believe all those short Brugs are blooming their heads off for you like that!!! They look wonderful

Thanks for the information.

I only have two brugs blooming nicely right now. My white aurea that Kyle gave me has one bloom. Susanne and Harlot will bloom before long. This is unusual to have blooms before July, so I'm happy with the few I have. After the storms tonight, there might not be any blooms out there.

Thanks Judy.

Don't want to dig them up in winter! I did put one recent cutting into the ground to experiment, but am afraid of losing the two I've had all year.

MK, I'm in your zone, only in southeast Arky, and I leave mine out, and so far, I haven't lost one. But, I do add two sacks of mulch to each brug. This year, I have any number that wintered in the ground that are just about to bloom, and the ones that stay in the ground seem to get bigger and better, with more blooms and more flushes, each year. I make cuttings of the special ones, in case they don't make it, but I've been lucky, I guess, so far...

Really, Sherry? Hmmm.......now that poses a new idea! Question: does wind bother them? It seems that on breezy days mine get all ratty......maybe in the ground like a "real" plant, they'll fare better??

If it makes you feel any better, I have three that I have had for three years that absolutely refuse to bloom! I really am thinking that they were cuttings from under the Y and they die back every year and never have time to grow a Y. I could be wrong but that is my theory! LOL I started them all out of dormancy in March again this year and I am hoping they do something. If not, I may not bother with them anymore. Argh!

I can almost see why brugs can become an obsession.......kinda like AV's (which I also grow...lol). Bloom? Bloom! Bloom.....darn it.........!!!!

LOL I never thought I liked AVs. I was at the grocery one day and they had 4 different ones really cheap. I bought them all. I think they bloom every time I remember to water them. Ahem...
