Nice one kooger. Great photo. I see it grows in zone 4 which means I might just be able to grow it if I pick the right location.
Thanks! That'd be pushing the zone alright! lol Good luck! Hope u succeed! How often do u get below minus 30 deg. F That's about 34 or so below Celsius, right?
Let's see, how many nights below -30º. Probably all of Jan & Feb. Maybe I will have to rethink this. Living in zone 2b is very limiting & frustrating.
UCK! That's a whole lot of cold. I can't imagine living in z2. I've been helping my SIL in Edmonton compile a list of z3 plants - they just bought 5 acres west of the city and she wants to put a lot of it into wildflowers, etc. Part of it is a bit marshy/boggy. I'd love to see it when it's all done .... road trip.
How are north of Sudbury are u? We've taken the north route home twice (to Lindsay) and it's about the same miles as the south route, around the bottom of the Great Lakes. A very beautiful drive - did the mine tour in Sudbury too - hadn't done that since I was a kid! Our old neighbor used to head up your way for trapping season, he was from around there somewhere, last name of Barry, had family up there. He always had lots of fun stories to tell of the north country. :)
I moved up here from Toronto & talk about culture shock. Moved here as a teenager & night life was totally non-existant. I absolutely hated it. It is a good place to raise kids though. You don't worry as much as you would living in Toronto. Living in the north is a totally different experience from living in southern Ontario. People are so friendly & will help out people they don't even know. We are about 250 miles from Sudbury. My son went to college in Sudbury.
My daughter lives in Edmonton. Great part of the country. So many things to see & do. Your SIL will have a great place with 5 acres. Just think of all the flowers, birds & critters you can have. I would love it. After she is finished you will have to post some pix of the completed project.
Oh wow, didn't realize Cochrane was that far from Sudbury - there's hundreds and hundreds of miles of trees and rocks and rivers up there. Always amazes me just how large it really is up there with so few people!
Climate wise, I think Edmonton is fairly decent - winters are a tad long tho - summers usually in the 70 s - I like that! We get too hot in the summer here - most years we turn the heat off the same day we turn the AC on. Very little spring here. We've had hundred degrees in April and blizzards in April. There is a reason why this area was only settled in the mid to late 1800s - cold, harsh winters and hot summers. Add very few natural trees to that - only along the rivers. When it rains, it tends to deluge - I had never seen that growing up until we went to visit cousins in AB at Rocky Mtn. House. Rained to hard - had to stop, couldn't see to drive. That was somewhere in SK. We get that here too and the water washes out the crops. Kids don't play in the rain here - too stormy and dangerous. We used to always go play outside in our bathing suits on a rainy day - didn't have to worry about lightning - just a nice quiet all day rain. Here it seldom rains without storming. What a difference!!
