This week-end Shirley1md was out in CA for her sons graduation...we talked and invited her to our Open House for our new daylily club....Here she is ( on the right ) with Cal Sue (middle) and Tracy/Lilystorm (on left).
We had a great day...starting at 9am...ending with dinner at Outbacks Steakhouse at 8pm...I hope that Shirley had the energy she needed for her sons graduation from Stanford today.
Sorry all you other local members missed meeting her...a really nice gal ! Plus she visited Chalk Hill Clematis Nursery before our day together and brought me some clematis that were sold out on the web-site! Really good looking ones too!!!
DG'ers meeting other DG'ers
that is so nice! those mini get togethers.
I love getting together with other nearby DG'ers. Have done a few times and we have a ball
So proud for all of you!!! A get together like that is always so very nice.

How cool is that! I love seeing all those smiling faces. It is also great to put faces to the names. Now I know who I am talking to. LOL
What a good looking group you ladies are! How neat you had the opportunity to meet. Thanks for posting the picture.
Now that looks like fun, I'd love to have the opportunity to meet some DG gardeners!!
Its so much fun to meet other DG members
people in the North East I think are not really in to it
We have like no one wanting to do a round up
You guys are soooo lucky
well, hop on the plane, come to texas and will show you some dg hospitality and comraderie (plus unbearable heat)
It's great that you were all able to get together. Looks and sounds like you had a great time.
CC, you know we could adopt you in Ohio! We are a friendly bunch. We might be planning something for around August.
I WAY need to be adopted
CC, come to TX, we love round-ups!
Adopt her Chele, she is a doll.
I wish I could have gone. You guys look like you had such fun. I see Shirley listened to me and brought a hat. I hope she didn't fry at Stanford like I did last year.
I am drowning here. Literally. I think I almost am ready to admit I have taken on too much. No way I could spend 12 hours away right now.
Margie, I still haven't looked through your list. I come in at 9 at night and am so tired. I just sit here and ache. I haven't even read thru all my emails now for days. I f I buy 1 more plant, just take me directly to the looney bin.
We missed you kell...it would have been wonderful to meet you! Someday!
I was just thinking of what datdog said kell...more is not always better only more! That is the spot I am beginning to get in too!
Anytime for the list...kell...I will keep bright and graudy in mind and maybe pick some out for you myself!
Margie

Hi Everybody! I'm back! Got in today during the wee hours of the morning. Talk about some major jet lag!
What a great time I had meeting Picturelady (Margie), Lilystorm, (Tracy, Margie's Daughter-n-law) and Cal_Sue! Margie & Tracy picked me up at my hotel early Saturday morning and we all went to a N. Calif. Daylily Open House. The meeting was held at a member's home in Concord (I believe), plus we had the pleasure of touring his beautiful gardens.
After the Open House, we all went to Calif_Sue's home to tour her garden. She had several Brugs in bloom that filled her lovely garden with their delicious scents. Her garden was filled with lots of flowering Daylilys, Passion Vines that covered a two story wooden jungle gym/tree house, Roses, Succulents, and many lovely plants that love the hot/dry weather that N. California has to offer. Thanks again Sue, for the Daylilys you gave me. They traveled very well and kept me company during both flights across the U.S. From there, we went back to my hotel, where Margie's Clematis vines were waiting for her. I swear that the Clematis, "Princess Diana" was going to wind itself around the balcony spindles, if it were left to its own devices! I just hope that my Clematis vines (which I packed & shipped home) look as good as Margie's, after their trip across the country! I'll know as soon as they arrive! We ended the evening with a delicious dinner at the Outback Steak House. It was such a busy, fun filled day and it was definitely one of the highlights of my trip to California! Thank you SO MUCH for making it such a wonderful mini-roundup!!
Kell - thanks again for ALL your tips about attending Stanford's graduation! I remember to bring a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and to dress in comfortable & casual clothes! Bottled water was handed out at the stadium's entrance and it was definitely needed! You were right! It was hot, hot, hot! We purchased seat cushions there, because that was the one thing that I forgot to pack! We enjoyed the commencement speech by Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Computer. It was definitely one of the most interesting commencement speeches that we had ever heard! Around noon, we left the stadium and proceeded to our son's College of Engineering (Aerospace/Aeronautics) graduation. I was delighted that we had an air-conditioned and comfortable seating in their Engineering auditorium. I felt bad that some parents & graduates had their individual college graduation outside! We definitely lucked out! Afterwards, there was a lovely & delicious buffet for the graduates & parents.
The celebration continued into the late afternoon/early evening at a friend's house, that works with our son. We enjoyed champagne toasts and a wonderful barbeque in her lovely backyard/garden. Then on Monday, after visiting Point Reyes National Seashore during the day, we had a delicious Italian dinner in San Francisco to round out the celebration! We took your suggestion Kell, and ate at Bucco de ....... (please help me out, I can't remember the last part of the name)!
I will post pictures as soon as possible! As you can well imagine, we got tons!
CC: I forgot to mention that the Mid-Atlantic R.U. is next weekend, June 24th - 26th. We will be more than happy to have you join us and we are more than willing to adopt you!
HEY! I'm glad I decided to peek in the Brugs forum to see what was going on...Shirley, congratulations to your son on his graduation...and ya'll looked GREAT! You in your DG shirt and the others in their club shirts...they are neat looking. Jo
Gee Shirley, seat cushions! I needed them and never even knew it till you mentioned it just now. I think they have the graduation in the football stadium just to grab the last bit of money the parents may have left after paying for Stanford for 4 years. LOL. I remember the straw hats were $36 a piece. Such a rip but to survive out there in the sun, you had to buy them! LOL And we sadly had to go to the second part at the Engineering school, but Computer Science, outside with no shade at all. I lasted 10 minutes and had to leave and go into the shade. It was that hot.
Buca di Beppo is so much fun, glad you loved it. CONGRATULATIONS to your boy. What a great accomplishment!
Glad you had a good visit Shirley and glad to have met you. I remembered after you left that I had wanted to give you some of that lime succulent. It seems popular and once you buy just one plant, you can snap off pieces and spread it all around. Here is it's name and some info I found on it
"Sedum rupestre 'Angelina'™
A teriffic low evergreen groundcover for sunny areas with poor dry soil. Angelina forms a trailing mat of succulent golden-yellow leaves. Clusters of yellow starry flowers appear during the summer. Nothing glows like this angel in the rock garden or at the front of a perennial border. This plant is also great in pots.
Ht 10-15cm Sp 30-60cm Zones 3-9"
Oh, and I love Buca di Beppo, great suggestion Kell. Always great for a group.
Thanks everyone for your hearty congratulations!
YES, Yes, yes!!! Buca di Beppo was the name of the family style restaurant! Delicious food and very generous portions!
Kell, sorry to hear that the Computer Science Department had their graduation outside. I'm sure you weren't the only one that couldn't stand the sun/heat and sought out the coolness of the shade. I did notice that a couple of departments, for example the Law graduates, choose another weekend for their commencement excercises. It was so noted in the commencement booklet. Perhaps, that may be implemented by various departments in the future, so that EVERYONE can enjoy their son or daughter's graduation in air-conditioned buildings! I don't think that's too much to ask!!
Your Sedum rupestre 'Angelina' sounds wonderful, Sue! I'll send you an e-mail.
BTW, I received 1 of 2 boxes today. All the Clematis plants travelled very well! I think that wrapping the root ball in pre-moistened (water) disposable diapers really made a difference! I then put the diapered root ball into a plastic bag and tied it with a twisty. Hope my other box will arrive tomorrow and the Clematis will be in the same good condition!
Here's my passion vine that Shirley mentioned. This play structure that my husband built used to only have the wisteria on it. I planted the passion vine in a large 10-15 gal. pot and placed it in front of the wisteria and it now covers it, actually devours it almost. Can't even see the pot anymore and it has rooted thru the bottom. This will be cut back soon and then the structure cut down so we can add on to the garden, need more planting room. I love the blooms on this up close but they fade from far away, wish it was the red one to really pop.

WOW, that is big. I take it that winters do not bother it. Sad you must cut it down but I guess it will quickly regrow elsewhere.
Glad you clematis made it Shirley!! I never thought of using diapers, I usually use a wet paper towel and a plastic bag.
We rarely get a frost here Kell, I know you get a bit colder up there where you are although last winters early Nov. frost caught me by surprise. I didn't loose anything but the coleus that I hadn't brought in yet, not even the brugs died down like usual. I have never had any damage at all on the passion vine, I think it's hardier than some.

I had no clue San Jose was warmer than here. I may have to move!! I remember that frost last year, only one we had. It came so early I was sure it meant a cold, cold winter. I got brug leaf damage.
Oh you probalby are hotter in the summer though. I hate heat. I melt. So forget that. LOL
No I do think you are hotter too. (Not exactly sure what city you are in though, just guessing about where) We have the bay affecting us a bit so got a different micro climate. I am actaully close to the Milpitas border so am cooler in summer, warmer in winter than Margie who lives more toward the Almaden Valley, further away from the bay.
Let's see. LOL. We are 59 degrees now.
So are we! Just checked Yahoo weather.
I am right on the Bay, Sue. Well, maybe a quarter mile away.
How very cool! I wish when I'd gone down to California last Feb that I'd been able to touch bases with some other DGers, but I wasn't lucky. Especially finding a nice wonderful person from Maryland there - how very very nice. Now I'm sad. Wish I could have been there. But happy for you all! so: :-( and :-)
