Storm & Cucumber Beetle Damage

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Boy Howdy!!! We've had some bad storms, up from the coast. I went out in the rain at 5AM to survey the damage... DANG. I suppose the wind brought in Cucumber Beetles because a few hours ago, I found two on this brug. It's hard to tell which has done the most damage. I'm seriously wondering if some of my brugs are going to make it or not.

Sometimes, we just can't help but feel like life has kicked us in the teeth, but the longer we stay down the harder it is to climb out of the hole. For this reason I alway keep Pork Chops and Taters on hand!!! I'm headed to the kitchen now!!

Judy's cure for the blues!!! Posted in Jokes and Chatt on Nov 16, 2004 the last time I had to take the cure!

I was outside working, tripped over a water hose, landed on my bottom, jarring my poor damaged rib and just started bawling. Too much stress will do that to a person.

Now if I had lived in any other part of this USA, I'm sure I would have gone to bed with a big bowl of ice cream like all those movies on TV want you to think, but we're tough out here in the country.

I got a package of pork chops out of the freezer, thawed those babies and commenced to start cooking. Dipped them in flour with lots of salt & pepper, popped them in a skillet full of hot grease and while they were cooking I sliced up a big batch of potatoes. When the chops were ready I tossed in the potatoes, fixed a pitcher of ice tea, took up the taters, piled it all on a big tray and asked DH if he wanted to join me, I was going to sit and eat this greasy food with my fingers, til I felt better!!!

My attitude is better, but my stomach doesn't know what to think, it's been a long time since I drowned my sorrows in grease!!!

Ahh, grease! The other food group!

Stay tough, Judy! I keep watching all those green trouble spots on the weather reports. Looks like nastiness is heading east, northeast, from the south. Should be soaking New England this week too.

Well, since there was a small (5.6) earthquake 60-70 miles from here I'm sure my chicken relatives would choose the rain over the 5 second shake. :-) (My relatives all live in Rhode Island, where the polititions are especially crooked, but they can all make a hell of a marinara sauce) :-)

Edited to correct spelling.

I have damage like that too, but haven't seen a cucumber beetle near the two brugs that look that way. I thought it was the hard winds that caused it. I've had bad infestations of cucumber beetles in the past and all they bothered was the blooms. Never had a hole in the leaves from them.

Were your beetles the ones that are yellow and spotted? I hope I didn't smash the little critters needlessly!!!

Yep, I agree, Brugie, my damage like was caused by wind, falling sticks, limbs and hail. You can see the leaves on several brug where there are healthy leaves above and below. OTOH, I have some seedlings planted with my original brug and two of them have been badly chewed, but the other ten or twelve are just fine. I decided to let it be and since I have duplicates, I'm just let the bugs have those two, without getting out the big guns and wait it out and see how it goes...

OMG Judy your poor brug reminds me of mind after the hail. I know what you mean about going on a bender and eating bad stuff to make you feel better. Right after the hail damage I did damage to a big bag of peanut M&M's. It didn't help the brugs out and don't really think it did me any good. But it was the whole ideal. After I consumed the peanut M&M's then I went outside and sniped all the damaged leaves off. Now every time I see a warning on TV or a bad looking cloud in the sky I just say a few choice words under my breath.

Mary I don't think I would want to live in an area that has earthquakes. The opening up of the ground and swallowing you whole doesn't sound good to me at all.

Judy, the only kind that I've had are the spotted ones. At least they are the only ones I've noticed. I did find some earwigs when moving pots yesterday.

I've removed all the damages leaves so I can tell if the beetles are eating what's left. If so I'm going to purchase the poison you recommended on the Garden Foe thread.

I may loose one or two of the plants, hopefully that will be all. They appear to be in a weakened condition. I've gottten superthrive and messengers which I will use after the rain stops for a day or so.

WHAT? You ate those pork chops without gravy? What kind of Southern remedy is that?

So sorry to hear you got hit by the storm. So far, we have dodged the bullet. It keeps clouding up looking scary, but, seems to be passing by....so far anyway... It has rained 10 times today if it has rained once. I still had to pull out the water hose this evening...I think the heat is just zapping alll the moisture.

I had a nice treat tonight. After I came in from a three hour watering session, my hubby made cinnamon toast (one of my fav security foods) and coffee with Bailey's, a great way to end a fun weekend at home with the family...
