Brug leaves

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

You'd think I was growing tobaccy!!!
Biggest I ever grown.

Thumbnail by Tropicman

Yep~ Those are big leaves.
I'm afraid if you would use them as tobaccy you would go Wacky.....LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Great leaves for Kristi to use to make her cement leaves. Some get almost too big, I think.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

The biggest I have are on this Brugie cross I started from seed in Feb. Easy 2' long and 10" or more wide.
What plant are those on?

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

My largest is L'Amour X EP (thanks Kell) at 25 x 12 inches

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Those are huge, I had some very big ones on a very small plant so I took them off, they were weighing her down

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I have some huge leaves too, and I'm like you Kell, I wonder if they are too big, PB and Rosamond have a running battle for biggest/best, but my year old PB/RD are so busy growing Y after Y and leaves the size of a canoe, and no buds yet. Then, there is little Pink Favorite nestled in near them, who has small leaves and is covered in buds. Then, I have a PB and RD, bubbler girls, by the cement pond, and they have already had their first flushes. I dunno, I never know...

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

My Creamsickle, Whiskers & Super Nova have huge leaves - but not 25 inches long - cripes! But if they were 25 inches long, they'd be on the ground getting damaged. Don't want THAT!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Tropicman how are you keeping these huge leaves protected from all the bad weather we have been having? Or are they in pots and you move them into the garage when the weatherman says hail or 70 mile an hr. wind.

Corte Madera, CA

oh, my! beautiful humongous leaves.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

They are on Pink Beauty also, and they are growing in the ground right next to my Tiki hut for protection, haven't looked today at them, afraid too after that hail storm last nite!!!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Tropic, did you winter them inside or a GH??

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

yes they cuttings from last fall, rooted them in plastic coffee can, until April then planted them in the ground.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Well, you did it exactly right, they are big and healthy, congrats!!!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Will good to hear tropicman you made it Ok, and didn't really loose anything. Because you had your yard looking so nice. Maybe we are through the worst of the summer storms now. Let's keep our fingers and toes crossed.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Wow! Those are big! (Or that is a Ken Doll arm. LOL)
Two of my brugs stick out with huge leaves. One is Orange Sherbet. They are huge and really dark green compared to my others. The other one is one of Susie's crosses. I wasn't sure it was going to pull through winter but I'm betting on blooms not too far off!

San Manuel, AZ(Zone 9b)

It's fun reading about how big the leaves are on all of your Brugs.....I went outside just now to measure mine and they are only 16" and have no idea what kind it is......guess I'll have to wait until they bloom......there are 5 nice buds.......how long does it take for them to develop? I'm a newbie to this plant altho I had one before and didn't have a clue what I had!
Also what do you all use to fertilize them with....I'm using Miracle Gro.....seems to be doing the trick......

Wow Madelyn65 as healthy as your looks I wouldn't change anything about what you are doing. It is a beautiful plant good color and is about to bloom. You have the knack keep up the good work. Post a picture when it blooms.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

2pd,there calling for a dry week ahead, temps in the mid 80's,so things should takje off and grow.
Mad 65 yours looks great and should be blooming shortly.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Yes Tropicman when I heard the weatherman say yesterday morning that we were looking for 7 days of no rain or bad storms and temp. in the 80's I almost broke my foot jumping up and down and yelling. I was like a kid in a candy store, so happy. That's what I am hoping for is to see all the plants starting to grow but I'm not looking forward to the weeds growing, but I guess we have to take the bad with the good. I am ready to start pulling them weeds.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yes pulled a few weeds every morning before I leave to work, just on the weather they changed there minds storms tomorrow nite!!!!!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I really get the feeling the weather men has no ideal on what is going to happen until it happens.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Love those leaves, Don. Let's see the blooms, if they are BIG also?

Don't think too much of weather people right now, we need rain so bad, they have predicted it everyday for the last 2 weeks..........nothing!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I hope you get rain real soon Hibiscus, but hope you won't be like us and when it starts it doesn't know when to quit. Or hope you don't get any storms just the slow soaking rain all night long.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Thank you 2. I hope when it starts the gardens will not be flooded and sit in water, guess we have to take the good with the bad. Just hope it's not too bad!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I was finally able to get into my garden and get it roto-tilled today. I think it has been 2 weeks or more since I was able to do it. So now it looks much better. I even got some of my flower beds worked up today and got the ground all loosen up. I need to get me some mulch and get them mulched. I have never used mulch before.

I watered all my plants in pots and transplated to tropical hibiscus, and then washed off the patio.

I have to thin out my castor beans they are to close, so I tilled up some ground around a light post. Hope they aren't to big to transplant. Also had a new hardy hibiscus that I got off EBay and got it planted. I need to spread some grasshopper bait, I am seeing a lot of babies. But if it is going to rain I would like to wait until after the rain that stuff is to expensive to spread and let the rain wash it away. I started working outside at 7:30 this morning I am hot, I stink bad and it is time to get in the shower. It's been a busy day now tomorrow I will fix up my sprayers and feed all my brugs and hibiscus.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Hi Linda,

Transplanted tropical hibiscus, "Brilliant" had 3 plants in pot, so now I have 3 pots of hibiscus "Brilliant".

Sorry Don, didn't mean to hijack your thread, making a new friend here. Still want to see pics of your brug Pink Beauty when she blooms.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I'll be sure to post them when they do.rain is just to the west of me,sure don't need any more.Mosquitos now are showing up.
My hardy hisbiscus are getting close to opening.
Linda hadn't seen any grasshoppers up here yet,so make sure you get them all before they migrate up north!!!LOL

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I'll do my best to kill out the population of grasshoppers. Not only do I hate to have one of them critters jump on me but I hate to see them on my plants. This grasshopper bait I get really works.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

What is the name of the bait and where to you purchase it at?
Will it work on other insects?

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

It is called Semaspore Grasshopper Bait, I ordered it last year but of course I got it a little latter in the season, when the grasshoppers were bigger. But they say it really works better if you get it when they are just starting out to grow. They eat it and die, then the other grasshoppers eat them and then they die. They are cannibal's. Then you just have a domino effect. After we used it last year we found shells of grasshoppers everywhere, so this year I plan on getting a head start. Here is the link go in and read about it, it will impress you. I know we have been told it's hard to find anything to kill grasshoppers. Let me know what you think.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Seems like it might be a good product, downside is it only has a 6 week shelf life, goodside is that once applied and ate by the grasshoppers it carries over to the following year.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

It will last longer if you can keep it refrigerated.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks,will keep that in mind.
