kitty seizures

I have a 10 months old cat (O'Malley) who has had 3 seizures since May 18. Last night was the third. Our vet wants to medicate him with phenabarbitol. This is a very strong drug, and we really don't want to put him on it. Anyone else out there in "petland" who has had a similar experience who can give some advice? I have three other cats who are fine.
