CLOSED: Wanted: Coleus,Scardy Cat Plant

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Looking for this coleus cross plant called Scardy Cat Plant.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Anyone?

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

I know its called coleus canina and I know Territorial Seed Company and Charley's Greenhouse both carry it. I asked for it here earlier in the season and no one knew about it.

I'd love some, too...

Barb

Aurora, TX(Zone 8a)

Hiya, Barb--where'd you order yours? I saw it listed in Garden Supply at $35 for a 6-pack!! =0 Did you find it elsewhere at a better price? I'm thinking I need this stuff for the cat, beagle and cheagle that live at my house!!! And, like to go poking into my garden.......>=/

MKJ

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

I ordered from Charley's Greenhouse for $29.95 for six, but I just got a call that it is backordered. Territorial Seed Company had it for the same price but they've been out of it for months, too.

Maybe I'll split the six with y'all (southern for my Jersey youse) when it arrives...

Janice I have a small cutting I can share-have cut it back to share with 2 other people I bought about 6 of them at 50 cents each last fall and wintered one over in the house. Will mail it out to you middle of the weekas I am out to meetings for two days Shirley

Corpus Christi, TX(Zone 9a)

I have several nice sized plants that I can trim back and send you cuttings. Barb

Aurora, TX(Zone 8a)

Barb & Barb (smile), I would love to trade or go in on any coleus scaredy cat plants you guys have/will have. =) I appreciate anything you guys want to work out, and will offer what I've got in return--or some pitch in money!

=) Kathleen / MKJ

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

Well, Kathleen, once I get them I will be more than happy to share...

Barb

Corpus Christi, TX(Zone 9a)

Budgielover, you have mail. Cuttings on the way.

mkjones,
I have another plant to take cuttings from but it has been in the sun more than the others. It looks heat stressed and may need some fertilizer. Will keep my eye on it and if it looks better will offer cuttings to you. The plant I took the cuttings for Budgielover from was in great shape in a little bit of afternoon shade. As you know, TX heat can be brutal and down here where I am there are very few "full sun" plants. It is burning up already pushing 100 degrees (and with the humidity factored in, T highs in the 100 +).
Also, could wait until the shaded coleus grows back a bit and send you cuttings from that one. Will watch this thread to see if you are successful in getting cuttings elsewhere. If not, will be happy to send some later. Want to be sure to send only strong, healthy cuttings when I do send them out. This coleus has much thicker leaves than the regular types though and ships well. Sorry for now, Barb2

Aurora, TX(Zone 8a)

So nice of you to think of me, Barb! I'll just wait patiently and see if & when some scaredy cat may come available for me. =) Thought of it today......I have the regular sun coleus, and my Cheagle, Ernie, has a particular affinity for it. Came out this morning, and he'd jumped into a huge planter of it, uprooted some. Dug into a small coleus bed near the garage (my husband's special yearly request) and dug up half of it........again...........>=(

Definitely need to find something to ward him off! DH threatening to keep the coleus, but not Ernie!! ;-)

Syracuse, NY(Zone 5a)

Hey everyone,

I'm very new here but I think you are all in luck, I bought a plant last year and have been growing it all winter indoors, now I have a tray of rooted stems and an overflowing original plant that I'd be happy to whack down to size. I didn't read all the threads towards the end (just the ones with the ridiculous price tags attached.. this plant roots in air, I can't see any reason to charge that much) but mine's gets full afternoon sun in a pot of succulents... the hotter and drier the stronger the scent (and it is pungent)... one last thing, and not that I know what this smells like :ahem: but the odor that is keeping rodents and cats and dogs away is very much a cross between skunk and marijuana. And it's quite strong, you'll see when you plant them.

I'm very interested in trading, though I haven't had the time to make a want list.. but if you've got something special to suggest I'd be happy to consider it. Otherwise postage would be fine (though that being said, I haven't done my homework to find out exactly what postage would be, feel free to suggest a means of delivery and how much it should cost, I haven't actually done any trading/gifting yet).

At any rate, I should have plenty of cuttings (they'll root in about a week, but they're sortof like hen and chicks, you can basically plant the stem in the ground and just treat it like a rooted cutting) so please let me know if you want one or two (again I got the plant last year and now I have tons, in theory you should too.) and also let me know what you have to trade, I'm going to take a couple of photos and try to make a quick want list.

Cheers, Byron.

Well, I can't go back and add a photo. I'm just going to post this one.

Hi DarwinESF and Welcome,

Glad you will be able to send out to some cuttings/plants to some of the others as only one of my plants was ready . I sent out 5-6 unrooted cuttings in a priority box filled with those packing "peanuts". Even with the roots wrapped in wet papertowels it cost less than $4.50 to ship with a Delivery Confirmation. Have been using the DC#s mainly because the PO has a better history with me as far as delivering the packages faster. Since I live in zone 9 (HOT!) and was shipping to zone 8, I was looking for speed. Doesn't always work out but on average the DCs arrive in a shorter time frame.

I like this stinky plant. I do warn people I send it too that it Smells but a great advantage has been that my cat does not use my herb bed as a litter box. One nice extra is the plant has a nice flower that looks somewhat like a lavender bloom. It sure doesn't smell like lavender though... Barb

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I've already tested my cuttings on the dogs and they turned up their noses and walked away. Haven't tried the cats yet. I plan to spread them around the different beds so I don't have to keep finding surprises when I did

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

hey Byron
where in Syracuse are you?
Maybe we can work out a trade

Syracuse, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks Barb, yeah I have to admit I've always semi-liked the smell of skunk, skunk cabbage, and of this plant: it's very earthy (though very strong), and I did let it flower over the winter and was pretty suprised; not your average coleus flower with the tight bract that the actual flowers come from, reminded me of lavender or rosemary flowers stuck in a green pinecone. I was planning on washing the roots clean of dirt on the rooted cuttings and packaging them pretty much as you did, these guys can take a lot of abuse from my experience. Thanks for the DC# tip too.

Crestedchik I just bought a house on University Hill, which is why I've got so many plants to share (haven't had too much trouble with cats or dogs or rabbits, but deer on the other hand..). I have to admit I came here for school three years ago and decided to put down roots (ahem) so I'm not sure where West Monroe is but we can certainly figure out what the distance is and whether it's worth a trip or if it would be better to try mailing.. Either way, I'd love to share.

Thanks Kimmie,
Everyone has been so generous that I think I'll have enough to put in several beds now if all the cuttings take.
Thanks again everyone.

Well this is a rooted pot full..So hopefully it will survive.

Syracuse, NY(Zone 5a)

Crestedchik - Not the UPS store on E. Colvin? You may work right down the street from me. Nice to see neighbors here, how about this heat huh, almost makes you miss the snow (absolutely kidding). Well, I certainly have a lot of plants to trade (but it's going to be a while before I can list them all.. especially since many are unknowns to me), if you are right down the road you'd certainly be welcome to stop by after work etc. and have a look, see what I have (and you know, let me know what you have) and work out a bit of trading. I often want to pull off the road and go knocking on doors to ask gardeners if they'd be interested in trading... haven't done it yet.. but it's just so silly that we all weed out/thin out/prune down plants that other gardeners are paying (sometimes a whole lot) for.. send me an e-mail and let me know what you're thinking.

BassetMom - I'm definitely interested in the bay laurel.. Hope I can give it what it wants, sounds great. If you want to do multiple I also don't have any white iris (siberian? bearded? I'm fond of them both so either way is great) and I also just found out the bee balm in my new yard isn't the red like I thought, it's a kindof corally pink color.. So I'd also be game for some of that.

mkjones - certainly do, though I've gotta say mine are definitely not as well established as Kim's plants... Though I believe they do get ruffles to their leaves when grown in more sun (this year I barely had time to pot some up in a tray and just kindof kept them where they were out of the way, didn't realize there was such a call for them). At any rate, definitely want to try out the orange dew plant... every iceplant I've tried I've managed to kill over the winter... but I am confident that I'll make peace with the genus soon. Hopefully before this winter. If you want to do multiple cuttings, I'm also a bit of a plectranthus fan.. grew a lot of the silver coleus the past couple of years (this is the first year I didn't propagate them over the winter) and would like to give another type a shot. Also I am a bit of a begonia junkie, but I don't know any of the names of my plants, so if we can establish that we have different types I think I actually might have rooted begonias to trade as well (or just the coleus, you choose ;) )

I'm sorry I didn't start trading sooner.. this is strangely entertaining. I feel sortof like I'm shopping at a free greenhouse.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Nope,not the UPS Store
The main building,UPS,on Northern Blvd,I drive tractor trailer so I work really odd hours,so I don't think I can stop after work(I get out at 9 am) You are probably working then
But I'd love to work out a trade, you should take a drive up here
I have quite a few tropicals,(I have a GH)and a large perennial garden....so you can go plant shopping in my garden.
MY husband would LOVE someone to take ALL my plants!LOL

Dayton, TX(Zone 9a)

This sounds very interesting! I have a terrible cat problem. The neighbor has 12!!!!! and they all potty in my yard. Would be glad to trade anything I have. Have some small Gerbera Daisies, small un named hostas, a 1 foot tall Philipine violet ( you'll have to put it in a pot where you live) Lobelia "fan blue". Just let me know. Ruth
(Philipine violet below the candalabra tree. I also have seeds of this))

I meant to say I have seeds of the candalabra tree.

My arms are wide open.

Corpus Christi, TX(Zone 9a)

Good grief ruthm, you need a dump truck full of the stuff with that many cats nearby. Will go outside right now and put some more water on mine to help them hurry up and grow! LOL
Seriously, it must really be a pain to have one's garden litter box to the neighborhood. I only have one cat and she stays in the yard. Have a 100 lb dog that keeps the outside "bad" cats out of the yard. The problem with the dog is she digs really Big Holes in the yard so she can get down into the cooler sand. She doesn't bother my herb garden where the S. Cat coleus is planted so I have one secure area. Barb

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Hey Barb,
Nice to know I'm not the only one with dogs that differentiate between "their cats" and other neighborhood cats. One night my one cat was out in the garage and a stray cat came in through the back door to the yard which is left open alot. Well, all it took was one hiss and my Belgian shepherd one out there as soon as I opened the door from the garage to the house. She chased that cat all the away across the yard and up the fence as far as she could jump. After making sure it was gone, she ran back to the garage to check on "her cat" and didn't leave it alone until she was satisfied he was OK. Go figure.
Jan...

Corpus Christi, TX(Zone 9a)

I know. And the dog has taken to waiting at the door so when the cat tries to get back in the house she has to pass the "smooching' (or maybe slobber) station. The dog likes to give the cat kisses or grooming or something. Thing is the dog's tongue is as large as the cat's head and the cat gets very annoyed by this behavior. It requires a lot of cat cleaning time to try to freshen up. But, face it, all my cat has on her paws. Barb

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I have a male silver medium haired cat who thinks the dalmation-rottweiler is his personal groomer. He will come up to where ever the dog is laying and start rubbing on him. Then he will plop down between the dog's 2 front legs and wait for the dog to start grooming him. This will go on for a long time until the dogs gets tired. One of these days,
I will tape it. Quite a sight!

Syracuse, NY(Zone 5a)

12 cats!! Yeah I'll definitely send you some of this ;). That philipine violet is great, (I'm very used to having to grow in pots and bring things in.. hooray Siberacuse), as would seeds from that candelabra plant! Garden photos like yours make me a little jealous, I studied a lot of tropical biology and love the plant forms etc... Though when the red maples start turning here in the fall it almost makes up for it.

Dayton, TX(Zone 9a)

I'll get it ready to mail out on Tuesday. Don't want it to sit in the post office over the 4th. Do you have Cuban Oregeno? It smells great and roots very easily.

I Kimmie,
Just to let you know, I just opened the little stinker
BTW, I love the little white plastic bag you put the roots in.
Jan...

(Zone 7a)

LOL LOL! I use them for all my plants now...he he he.
Did the smell blow you away????? How was his health?

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

It's look great. He is already planted and mulched. I'll send ya more bags on our next trade.

(Zone 7a)

K..Thanks! :-D

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I would love some of this when some one can share.

I use laytex medical gloves when I work in the yard so my nails don't get
too bad. Takes so much work to get them clean. But boy your hands sweat.
In this heat so does everything else.
Last night I did not have a pair and of course what did I dig in before I knew it? Yes, And this cat is not mine. I haven't had a kitty since my smurf died
around 8 years ago. He was 17 and got very sick. And of course his stuff didn't stink :o)

LMK what you may be looking for and maybe I have it.

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^
