That is Water Hyacynth. Jessamine

Kaleem,

That's a very invasive species in tropical waterways. It can choke out native plants and wildlife very quickly. Make sure you don't allow it into any native Pakistan waters. Here in the US it's become such a probelm they've outlawed it in most of our southern states.

I realize that water hyacinth is a real problem and I'm not trying to be funny here, but has anyone heard if this has been tested as a food source for livestock? My dogs will eat it by the pound and have never gotten sick from it, so it must not be toxic. If cattle or sheep would eat it, I would think it could be harvested pretty easily.

Syl, In Florida the Mannatee eat it all the time, by my Aunts stories they should learn to eat faster . Yhe water way neas her is almost closed because of it. But the mannatee help clear a path

Thank you so much for the detailed reaply. Baked Bulbs of this plant are available in the market and famous among people, They are saying this the great source of Calcium. Bulbs are known as Singara here.

I love the general appearance of this plant, but I have tried twice to grow it and both times, it died. Doesn't it grow well in full sun?
That's pretty cool that your dogs eat it! I wonder if I could sneak it into a salad for my family....
but now until I can get it to grow in the first place!

The answer to controlling this invasive, export it to Pakistan!!! But I suppose it's just easier for the USDA to OUTLAW it.

What a deal, get paid by the govn't for clearing it out and paid by customers in other countries.

Water Hyacinth can be fed to livestock, chopped up and used as a fertile mulch, used as a fuel, some places turn it into a fibre board for construction purposes. No shortage of ways to dispose of it, really...

earthworm ... that's about as bad as killing a golden pothos or not being able to make instant water (just add water). How in god's name can you NOT grow a water hyacincth?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

earthworm you have to harden it off to the direct rays of the sun before you put it out in your pond. I start mine off in morning sun (in a pail) and gradually get them used to its rays. Hyacinth purchased from a greenhouse are just like other plants.....they will fry (and die) if not acclimatized to the sun first.

My hens ate all the plants...... : (

earthwormlover, Koi will eat the roots of this plant and I've had problems with them not doing well because of that. Once I get my plant pond built they will go in there. If you have Koi and think maybe they might be the problem you can keep the koi away from the roots using a float ring and netting to make a type of floating basket to keep them in. I'm sure there are other ways, too.
