My Brug of Shame: Is There Hope?

Corte Madera, CA

Hello everyone. Attached is a photo of one of my healthy brugs and three that were feasted on by caterpillars and slugs. It has been over a month, and they haven't bounced back. The remaining leaves became yellow and have fallen off. I do see new growth though, and that gives me hope. What else can be possibly wrong with my brugs? And what can I do to nurse them back to health?

Thank you very much for your time. They are in 2 gallon pots, btw.

Are you fertilizing them? Looks as if they might be lacking nutrients, maybe a little epsom salts, or ironrite, mixed in as directed. It just might be the bugs drained most of their good properties right out of them. If you can keep mites, slugs, etc. off from now on they possibly will snap back with warm weather and fertilizers. New growth sounds promising. Good luck.

I would pop those babies out of the pots and see if there aren't slugs in the bottom who are eating up the roots.

Good call, Judy. Or root mealies....

Gee Annapet, they have something weird going on. At my house, caterpillars and slugs do not make a plant look like that. They worry me. On the first one next to the beautiful one, are those bumpy leaves? I wonder if it is a virus.

The last one looks like the new leaves are a little deformed too plus being so yellow, I was thinking spider mites. Have you checked for mites?

The green one is beautiful. I would move it away ASAP!

Unless they are purple brugs, I would actually toss them and start over. You are not that far along to have much invested and they look bad for sitting there over a month doing nothing. That spells trouble to me. How much new growth and is it a nice green?

Also you are in zone 10, you will have a longggggggggggggggggg growing season to start more.

Did you check for pot critters yet? You can try what Gloria suggests, but then if they do not respond well, I personally would not wait any longer and toss toss toss. And do not reuse the pots. And do not touch those plants and then touch your good ones just in case.

Poor Annapet!

I was thinking possibly a virus too, much who knows. I would keep them isolated from your healthy plants until you figure out for sure what is going on. I'd hate it to spread to your healthy ones.

Annapet, I agree with Kell, I'd toss them too. If you have to buy stuff to get them back into good health, it might cost more in time/money than just replacing them and you wouldn't even know if it would work...

thank you ALL for taking the time to write. that just makes sense to start all over again before they infect my other green leafy things! i'll probably nursery hop locally to hunt for brugs. but i've NEVER seen them in nurseries around here though. i wonder if valley grow has a year guarantee on plants like home depot? i won't hold my breath (sigh).

kell, right on. our growing season is LONG. perhaps i'll be busy enough with my roses while my seedlings grow in the background. (i wish) next thing i know the ones i planted along the fence are producing more than leaves.

sherry, my two goldens are cheering me up. the younger one is extra sweet since he almost chewed a bareroot abraham darby yesterday.

carol, i will PAINT ME a brug.

again, thank you all for the cheers and well wishes.

sincerely,
annapet

Gardening with Goldens is fun, huh??? Annapet, attached is a photo of Blueray, our 2 year Golden, and Red Parker, 1 year, they hate each other and don't ever forget it, lol!!!

sherry, how sweet!!! thanks for sharing that photo.

i wish i can have a cat. i suffer from all sorts of allergies...having a cat will really push it.

Thanks, annapet!!! I'm really sorry about you allergy - it would be rather dull around here without our animals...

update: i couldn't just chuck them. i moved all 3 far away from my other plants, fertilized and babied them a bit. whey they showed some progress (new leaves and all), i dug holes outside the fence and planted my trio.

the sorriest one, enchanted double white is BUDDING. i will post photos for sure when it finally happens.

thank you all.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

YEY!! Glad they snapped back.

the second one is NOT "enchanted double white" - - - turned out to be "jean pasko" (kell helped identify, thanks.) i did e-mail the grower, and he sent me another EDW. i liked that plant guarantee since i had no way of knowing jan 2005 i was sent the wrong brug.

the third is HG, also growing steadily. experienced bud drop though, but healthy nonetheless.

thank you for looking. i hope you are all having a great weekend.
