I just got my copy of Horticulture and was surprised to see a four page article about brugs. I was further surprised to only see four sources listed on their 'where to buy' page. What didn't surprise me is they appear to be underplanted with sun coleus. LOL How many of us do that? Anyway, they only listed the names of two "Jamaican Yellow" (should that have and n in it?) and Grand Marnier. I looked them up here to see who's they are and there are no hybridizer names. Didn't those appear in the entries at some point?
Brug article in Horticulture magazine.
I wish I could answer your question, but I'm new to coleus, in my own garden, this year. I never liked them, I supposed because they were common and lacked variety in color in my area. Now, they are like colorful birds or butterflies, each one prettier than the one before. Hope someone comes along that can answer your question...
I don't know about the brugs, but hi, Michele. Haven't seen you posting for awhile. Guess that baby is keeping you running.
You know something Sherry? I want to say thank you! You are one of the few people that seem to catch the posts that fall through the cracks and you say something! :) I have seen posts just slither away and die a slow death and never even get a nibble and I have seen others where you have taken the time to answer them and even give a nice long informative answer. You are a nice person.
If no one answers, it is okay. LOL I just thought it was nice to see the brug article with several varieties mentioned and even a couple of cultivars. Maybe I am losing my mind. I thought the PDB had the names of the hybridizers at one point. I might just be thinking of the ones where someone said on their own photo, who made the cross.
I have a list of crosses and hybridizers, but Jamaica Yellow doesn't have any information filled in.
I have not seed the article, I would like to see it.
you know i have day lilies planted around some of mine mine, one that are potted get ely ears and some that are in the ground depending on color get coleus. I am finding that the neon and he black one tator vine goes good around them. I don't like the tri color one though. and then some of them just has grass growing around them casue I have to much stuff to do... LOL you know...

I appreciate your post, Chele, thank you for your kind words. Having your question or post ignored is often just the nature of forums and subscription lists, if it isn't right up there on the top, they are often overlooked. I'm sorry it happened to you and the best part is that you didn't take it personally, smart girl!!!
Awe, life is too short. :) I'm just glad you pull them out of the gutter from time to time. LOL
Can I scan the article and post it or would that get me in trouble?
Chele it wasn't until just a couple of years ago that family trees were started to keep track of the Brug names, parentage and hybridizer.
There is now a place to register Brugs along with the hybridizers name so it will be know worldwide.
Unfortunately with some of the older Brugs the hybridizers name was lost through the years or never known which I think may be the case with these two as there is not much information on them.
Chele, you must have a scanner and scan the article and save to Word or Word Perfect. I have a Mac, and if you don't, it wouldn't do any good for me to give you the instructions, which have lots of steps, and all scanners are different. If the article was published by one of the Icannotsaytheirname groups, it is my understanding that NO info, from those groups is to be published or discussed here. That is my understanding but I could be totally wrong...
Thanks girls. I will look. I think the pics were taken of a garden in California and the article was written by one of their regular authors, but I will make sure. I thought it was just a general 'if you have never seen or grown these' article. I will read it over again but I do not remember any mention of any of the *groups*. :)
Hi Chele,
Let';s see if I can help you.
Variety: is Snaveolens are cultivated forms with the character of the wild species. They have medium-sized funnel-shaped flowers in white, pink and yellow.
Jamaica Yellow probably orignated in Jamaica (obviously with that name) LOL. It has 12 1/2 long yellow flowers.
I have seen alot of pic's where people under plant with all kinds of neat flowers for the summer, but I am not a Coleus fan either.
JoAnn
It will be great to read the article!
Ooooh Shirley! That looks great! I will have to find me some sun coleus! I have morning glories in some of mine... lol must have been from the soil. Ooops lolol.
Thanks Shelly. I'd pull those MG's if I were you. I let a Grandpa Otts grow in one of my brugs two or three years ago and it almost killed it.
Uh oh! LOL Out they come!! Thanks!
I bought a 12" Jamacia Yellow about 3 weeks ago and it's nice to see some information about it. Does anyone else here grow this brug? Any tips?
Guess what, Chele, when I returned from seeing our daughter and shopping, I opened my mail, and there was a very nice article in Horticulture magazine featuring Angel Trumpets, sent to me, via snail mail, by my pal. I haven't finished the article, but I was sitting on my bed reading and came to the part where it said that in areas where they winter outside that they will grow to heights of 10 feet - I looked out my window to see how tall my brug, wintered outside for two winters is, and it's 10 feet now and that wide, might be wider. And, they say they are only perennials in zones 9 and 10 and I'm in zone 8a. The writer was giving a general zone/size, but I'm glad they are growing bigger and able to take the weather in more areas. It's a great article Chele, and I think the forum would enjoy it. The article you mentioned is 'Twilight Delights', the night-scented blossoms of Brugmansia are intoxicating and dramatic - right?? I like the section re Air Layering, their photo speaks a thousand words, to me anyway. I used to do that with shrubs (sorta) by laying a brick on a branch in rich dirt. Whatever, the article is good and informative and I think the forum would love it...

Thanks so much for your input. I am about to take off on errands with the girls but I'll try to scan it and post it later. I have had a horrible cold and had a nice reaction to something night before last and was terrified I was going blind. LOL I apparently got something in my eyes that made them look like they were going to pop out of my head. After retracing my steps for the past 2 days, I really think I might have gotten Calamine lotion in them. Long story, thanks to my daughter. Geeze! When I get home later, I will try to scan and post it. :)
Michele, if I may be so bold, it sounds like you have 'brug eye', I understand that if you rub your eyes with brug moisture on your hands that it can cause your eyes to dilate, and I may have heard that brugs are used to make the eye med docs use to dilate eyes, but not sure about that. I had 'brug eye', but not seriously, washed it with a good eye wash several times and it was okay. But, if it's bad, you might need to see the doc...
Believe it or not, that was a rare day when I did hardly anything outside. I was busy painting inside. I went out I tied up some gourds, planted a banana and did some watering and that was it for outside. I know brugs contain atropine and I am very careful around them, me and especially the kids. My eyes were so bad and scared me so bad that I went to the emergency room. Let me paint you a very ugly picture. You know how you have whites around your eyes? Well in the course of a few seconds, my eyes went from perfectly fine to itching and burning. We had just gone to bed and now I do not remember if they itched first or I rubbed first. All of the sudden they were burning and itching and felt really weird and fat and I could not see right. I jumped up and went to the bathroom mirror to look. Everything in my eyes (both) that should have been white, was a big bulging pink flabby stuff that was sticking out of my eyelids. My eye skin all around swelled up to. I looked like those people you see with ebola on tv. It was terrifiying. I went to the ER in the middle of the night. That should tell you how bad they were. When I had surgery for a retinal detachment, I had to use an eye drop to dialate my eyes several times a day. This was nothing like that. I was diagnosed with something which they later called allergic conjunctivitis (pink eye from an allergen). It was really scary, but I am all better now. If the cold would go away so easy.....LOL
oh, wow. i'm glad you are better now, chele. that picture you described wasn't pretty. just glad you are ok.
i have a bad habit scratching my eyes just because, and now that i'm gardening, i try not to.
waiting for the scanned article, but i'm really curious now, i want to grab that magazine. i'm weaning myself from cooking mags and replacing them with gardening literature instead.
have a great weekend everyone!
I have found that many nurseries and even conservatories do not have as big of a grasp on brugmansias as we do here at Daves. If they only knew of this site to get educated more on them. Alot of places call them "yellow", "white" or "pink" and at the conservatory here in Spokane they had a variegated one that was very unhealthy - they require different care than most of the tropicals they are intermixed with.
We are very very lucky to have such a large group of brug fans that keep each other posted on do's and don'ts.
karrie, right on! the info on brugs here on dave's is so amazing. forget google when you seek brug answers. brug forum is the place to be, and only at dave's.
Hey, Badseed--I sent in a free-issue-blah-blah card to Horticulture about 2 weeks ago. Almost bought the August issue today. Think I should? Or, do those "trial issues" come pretty quickly? Anybody know? Don't want to miss an issue!! Are you talking about the July or August in your post, Badseed?
=) MKJ
Thanks for trying Michele.
Well the pic is clear. LOL Now, is the writing to small to see?
I could read it by increasing the text size here. Thanks Michele.
What issue is it????!
August is on its way to me...........
MKJ
Okay. If you can read it, I'll go ahead with the rest of it in a bit. I have company coming.
It is the August issue. :)
Thank you, Badseed!! Now, I REALLY can't wait for that issue to GET HERE!!
=D MKJ
hey badseed, did you scan it? I found out by accident that you can take a pic with your digital camera and get good detail.
Oh, the horrors!! I was at B&N today, and asked if, perhaps, they kept any of the July back-issues of Horticulture??
"No, I'm sorry," the young man replied, "we keep them for two days, and then, um, 'recycle' them."
"You TOSS them??" I implored. "Yeah," he said.
I could throw up. I told him that they'd have quite the market in sales for back-issues, and he agreed, saying that I'm not the only person to request them.
Drats......I wanted to read July!!!
MKJ =0
Go to the mag's website. As with my other favorite subscriptions, you can get back issues and myriad other things.
