seedling cannas are starting to bloom

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

This one is different..I nicknamed it Yell. Bowtie.........probably get composted later....these are in 6 inch pots and are already cracking the pots with divisions. At least it multiplies well. Unusual markings.

LOL Kyle, what a cute name for it. Did you cross pollinate or just take what your cannas gave you?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

kell, these seeds were from crosses I made in my canna phase back in 93" the seeds were crosses of several types.I have almost 200 seedlings this year.........many red foliaged and very narrow leaves. I used a small paint brush and had to cross them first light before the bees got to them. Not bad germination for 12 year old seeds..HUH? LOL

I was going to ask have they been growing for 12 years. LOL. That is just amazing. And even more amazing that you could find them after all that time. I can't find things I had just an hour ago. Sounds like the red leafed ones would sure be pretty!

I have such trouble with cannas here. They just take over the entire garden and do it fast. And then it is almost impossible to dig it all out. Against my better judgement, I planted 2 this year. A few years ago I spent an entire day digging one out and still did not get it all. . How soon we forget. I always make the mistake of thinking I can control whatever I am planting. Like the Blue Dawn MG. What a disaster that has been. LOL

Do you know how they got Tropicanna Kyle? That one is just so amazing. Was it a sport?

Kyle, that is a very pretty flower! Do you know which parent the red foliaged narrow leaves come from? I have a seedling like that too that hasn't bloomed yet:

Kyle,

If you decide to compost it may I have it instead? I don't normally don't care for canna blooms at all (I have a Tropicanna canna strictly for the foliage!!), but that one really catches my fancy!

I would love and hug it and call it whatever you wanted. ;->

Clare , most of my crosses were with wyoming and Eilleen Gallo from Calif.

kell, tropicanna is probably a sport..it is sterile, just like pretoria.can't be used in breeding either way.

Donna......this one is multiplying like crazy just in the pot......so I think I could spare a piece a little later in the summer..just remind me. :-)

Thanks, Kyle.

Thank you, Kyle!

Kyle, you must have tons of land to plant your seedlings.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

OMG, Kyle, I LOVE your 'Yell Bowtie'. How Unique!
If there is ANY way I can beg you out of one of your rhizomes???
I would be your gardener for a week!
Bet I'd have fun in your compost pile if you're gonna throw this one there....LOL
Sounds like I won't have anything you don't already....
EXCEPT maybe some of my AWESOME Japanese Morning Glory Crosses that I've created.
Or, be happy to just pay the postage.
Thanks much, Emma

It's kind of cute Kyle.

Kyle I would love to have any you plan on composting for my wildlife area, Hummers, butterflies and bees don't care what they look like. They would have a good pesticide free home if you ever decided you wanted any of them back. I bought 40 off e-Bay and only 3 came up. Talk about being T'd off. I let them know but that I just had major back surgery and couldn't deal with replacements so don't worry about it. I got no response so I guess they weren't worried lol

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Absolutely lovely! I'm envious - I got half a dozen Canna bulbs in traes, and not one of them has graced me with an appearance! Boo-hiss! Guess I'd better stick with tomaotes!

Foley, AL

I like it e man don't compost it...

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

ely..its safe for now...will evaluate it a while longer and see what it does...if it blooms in bunches like regular cannas or just individual flowers. :-)

Kyle,

I wanted to let you know your canna has been blooming like crazy this last month.

My DHisn't a lover of cannas either, but we are both really impressed and taken with how delicate the bloom is on this one.

Thank you again for sharing it with us. I look forward to enjoying it for many years to come.

Hello Eclipse nice canna I have seen one very close to it myself. A hybrid I did years ago. I have to say they look almost identical LOL. Not to steal your thunder away but thought you would like to see and compare. Amazing that we are both breeding and got this plant that looks almost the same. I have no idea on a lot of my first crosses so I have no idea on the parentage of this one. Good luck on your canna crossing I have enjoyed your pics. Maybe a trade will be in order in the spring. Maybe I can send you this one to compare to yours? If your in my area any time next season would be nice to show off hybrids to another breeder. THANKS

I had called this one banana split but was never a big seller probably only sold a hand full in the last 4 years. Here is a pic of the rest of the plant. It does have some great color just not the big giant flowers everyone looks for. It has some breeding potential I am sure.
