first time bloom

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

H. shepherdi has finally produced a bloom - the first for me. I love the long, narrow leaves on this hoya.

Congraulations cicada! Lovely flower, and I love their leaves too, so very different.

Thanks for all the lovely compliments. When I first saw it, I could only stare in admiration at the intricacy of its bloom. I can't quite describe the fragrance, but it is a nice one.

Dianne, you are right about it being exciting. When I touched the bloom, it was like touching a newborn child. I felt such a rush of emotion.

Shirley, you are officially hooked now! My H. shepherdii also bloomed for the first time this year. Seemed to take forever for the buds to mature. Happy Hoya-ing!

I have several plants of those as I LOVE them and even gave my sister and neice one because I was so impressed when they bloomed. I love the scent at night so I hang them outside my bedroom window. I also have one hanging just outside my office window here so the scent wafts in here when I am on the 'puter. My big one is just COVERED in buds right now. The other little ones have a few too, but nothing has bloomed just yet. I have them in a shadier spot now as thetop leaves started to burn when the sun came around in the spring/summer sky. It is a shame that to get the best and most blooms the foliage seems to have to suffer from the intensity of the light. I don't think this one likes too much sun on it.

I kept a H. shephardii hanging in the shade...and paid NO attention to it. Annoyed because it didn't bloom, I turned it around and the whole side facing the shadier part was solid blooms, every node!!! Now the plant (5' long and about 3' wide in a 12" shallow pot) hangs by the front steps in the shade and the scent is magnificent!!!
