How to prune a coral tree?

Port Saint Lucie, FL

I just bought a house in so florida and found out that i have a coral tree (Jatropha multifida) but it hasnt been tended to in, what looks like, years. It went dormant this winter and now is in pretty good bloom but ive seen much nicer trees than ours. I think it just needs some TLC and pruning. Does anyone know when and how to go about this?

Thanks for any help

I would think spring would be the best time to cut them here they can't take the cold. if you cut one witht the bloom on it you wouln't get the seeds off of it... it must be so nice to live where you don't have to tug it in... and my god I would not want to touch it with some cutters it is too prety.

You should be able to chop on it now and be fine. I would prune it to shape - however you want it, but I would do it regardless of flowers. If you have to chop them, they'll be back and you'll have a happier (and better looking) plant in the long run.
