help, Help!!! it taketh over, i'm being invaded by pineapple mint, I dont know where the regular pineapple came from but I planted the variegated there, I don't let them flower so they won't cross, go figure. and back in the way back is applemint, which i've killed alot of it.
REMEMBER THIS!!!!!!
DON:T plant these two kinds ofmints in the ground unless you want it to take over. Oh how I wish it were lavender and grapefruit mints out there instead, those two mints don't spread at all hardly.
Guess what my teenage son is going to do when he gets back from camp? any ideas? he's going to pull mint for me, just think of all the room for daylilies i'd have if I didn't have that mint there.
beware the pineapple mint monster
I guess I shouldn't say that, just look at this spicemint, taking over, I have to pull the mints every year, cause theyjust get out of hand, but I just love them, most ofmy mints are in the ground. and will you just look at that peuny grapefruit mint that is now 4 years old, i've moved it about 4 times, it's just not doing good, I really should have bought more from fragrant fields, but I do't think I saw it there.
variegated pineapple mint will come up green, just to fool with your mind. RoundUp works wonders.
(No, I didn't really write that, did I? NO, NO, I wouldn't be so cruel, ahem, must have been my evil twin!)
I'm considering using mint as a groundcover plant in our little orchard.... It'll attract bees, possibly repel varmits, and can even be mowed, making it much nicer than grass! Of course, I'd still be clearing spaces for poppies, nigella, etc, etc.
I mow the lime mint like it was grass, but it's not getting water, and starting to die, so I'm gonnna water it so it will live, it's so mixed up with the bermuda that it's hard to dig up LOL.
I do have a small orchard too, I guss I can do that, but it's too much trouble this time of year. I might think of that next spring when I can get outside to work better.
Which lime mint is that, Kathy? I'm trying to figure out my order from Fragrant Fields, and I definitely want to get some citrus ones, but I'm having a hard time figuring out which ones are the more robust cultivars that would spread nicely in the orchard.... They have Orange Mint, plus several JW varieties (Hillary's Sweet Lemon, Jim's Candy Lemon Lime, Julia's Sweet Citrus). I'll probably pick up those varieties regardless, as well as some others, but it would be nice to know which ones would do well in which spots.... the less vigorous ones can go into other beds.
I figure Hillary's Sweet Lemon is a vigorous spreader, since I read that it's an apple mint cross. And from your comments, sounds like Spice mint would be another good one for this purpose.
Thanks for sharing your expertise!
hillary sweet mint is a fast spreader, the lime mint I have is just plain lime not jim's candy lime, this lime mint I have is very pundgent, and a fast spreader too. I have lots if youwant some I have it in 3 areas.
Oh, yes please, I would love some lime mint! We'll have to work out a trade down the road.... Maybe you'd like the 'Jim's Candy Lemon Lime' mint? (BTW, FF lists it as different than the J's Candy Lime' mint, which they aren't currently offering.) I'll let you know what I end up getting, on the outside chance that I acquire something that's missing from your collection, LOL!
jim's candy lemon lime? that's a new one to me, don't have it, LOL. would love a few snips of it, I'll go stick the water hose on the lime mint area today, to get it to grow, I cut it a couple weeks ago, and the grass hasn't grown out and neither has the mint,
kathy
Heather & I plan to order:
Orange Mint
Hillary's Sweet Lemon
Jim's Candy Lemon Lime
Julia's Sweet Citrus
Jesse's Sweet Pear
Sister Julie's Wintergreen
Marshmallow
Candied Fruit
Wild Berries
Candy Pops
I'm still debating (briefly, as I'll order today) JW's 'Oregano Thyme' mint.... LMK if you've tried it / liked it! If you don't have it, I'll be happy to order it so I have something else to swap with you... the swap factor would put it over the edge for me, :-)
you better hurry and get your order in on the wintergreen, he didn't have many left, I have lots of the oregeno thyme too , i'd have to root it. I have a sweet pear, I think it's one of jim's mints, but it's not called jesse's sweet pear, I do have the rest of those mints though.
Kathy_ann, if some of that pineapple mint made its way to me during a certain SG swap, I wouldn't mind...
Barb
LOL, I'll make note of that.
cause if I don't, well, you know what wil happen then LOL
I love the pineapple mint. I have a nice spot of the variegated type and it is pretty and smells great.
Is anyone willing to send mint cuttings for postage? I have acreage, and mint is a great thing to naturalize with as far as I am concerned....
-LuLu
