Mangos

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

You remember that Mango tree that gave up a couple large branches last year during hurricane Frances?

Well, the tree is still going strong. Kitty corner across the back fence, there is a much larger tree that the fruit is already ripe. Mine seems to be just a bit behind.

I walk out in the back yard and with the sun now shining again, the fragrance becomes overwhelming. What?, you might ask does that fragrance resemble?

ROTTING FRUIT!!!!!! Some of the leaves are starting to fall, and I am getting about 2 mangos a day on the ground, the almost ripe, but still quite firm ones. Man ya gotta watch out you are not standing under it when one falls. They come crashing down through the branches and destroy everything tender on its way to earth.

It's manageable right now, but when they are all ripe and ready, I need to get some of the local mango lovers over here to harvest the fruit. Otherwise, they lay on the ground and rot and draw knats, other bugs, raccoons and possums to the yard. I really have to watch my poor little pond, one of those get in there, we are talking quick cesspool.

Where on earth would you get the idea that I don't care for mangos?

Here's a straight up shot of a couple of the smaller ones.

Mango lovers!!!! you are welcome to bring your mango pickers over and takem off the tree, any time now, PLEEEEEAAASSSEEEE DMAIL ME that you are coming.

Oh my gosh, Molly, I'm in shock!!!!! Don't you like to eat them?.....and think of all the Mango recipes you could make! The thing I miss most is my mango tree in Miami, sitting on the back steps eating Mangos out of hand with the juice dripping off my elbows. I have never met a Mango I didn't like, even the wild "turpentine" ones!! Oh for the good old days. *sigh*

Pati,

C'mon down, they are yours for the taking. No I don't care for the mangos.

Years ago when the kids were small, we had a mango tree in the back yard. The boys climbed it shirtless and wearing shorts and they broke out in hives up and down their legs, bellies and beyond the visible. Ever tried to schmear medicine on a preteen step childs back side? I guess bad associations have biased me. I just don't really even want to touch them.

The landlord tells me these are really good mangos and my SIL has already ate a couple of the firm ones last week and she wants me to save more for her.

:^))))

Gosh! Wish I was your neighbor. I can eat 3-5 mangos in a day and still want more. Its funny, when they are in season...we fight over the biggest ones...they cost me a $1.25 each imported from Mexico...I gladly pay.

If you eat green mangos you will break out in hives. This probably what happened to the kids. Been there, done that...now I wait for them to be really ripe.

Flowerjunkie, they sell mangos here 3/1.00. I love them with chille powder and lime juice.
Molly, I'm glad your tree survived. Mine didn't fare too well in the freeze, but they're coming back out slowly.
The sap in mango(leaves, bark, peelings) causes lots of people to break out. It contains an oleoresin and if you're allergic to poison ivy, more than likely you will be allergic to mango sap(but not the fruit, it's only when the juice/sap comes in contact with skin that you have a problem).
Papaya sap can also cause hives, especially if you have a latex allergy.

I am in Mango Envy!!! Trees here get Anthracnos badly (too wet) so we only get tiny wild ones $1each if we are lucky. The good ones from Maui sell for $3 and 4$ a lb. I drove to Costco yesterday 3 hours away to buy some Mexican mangos for 1$ each...Cheap!!!

LOVE mangos with lime and chile too, Cala.

Carol, I thought you guys would have lots of mangos! I never would have guessed they wouldn't like the climate. Do they have anthracnose resistant varieties? We have all kinds here, I like the big ones with red skin(and orangey flesh) the best. Are the Mexican mangos the ones with yellow flesh and kind of small? I don't like those as well.

You are so spoiled Molly living in zone 10.

Where do you learn all these things Susie? LOL

Susie, I like the Filipino ones the best. They are the small, yellow ones. They do not have any string in them. Gosh, now I have to stop and get one on the way to work.
