Hello all. Does anyone here have any milkweed starts or seeds I can get to help the Monarchs out? I cant find any milweed varieties at nurseries and would like to plant some on the back side of my property to supply Monarchs with a food source. If anyone has any I would gladly pay postage.
Thanks
Milkweed for Monarchs
Hi,
I'm sorry if I'm telling you what you already know, but have you tried asking the nurseries for "Asclepias" or "Butterfly Weed"? Milkweed is often sold with those names.
I have some seeds left from last year that I would be happy to send you, but I have no idea if they are still viable.

I've got A. curassavica, Mexican/tropical milkweed seeds. I'm not sure how well they stored either, but I'll send you some. Just send me your name and address. I'm all for saving the Monarchs!!
Thank you - you both have mail ;-)
Slg - I bought my milkweed from the Big Dipper Farm. They seem to have a lot of variety. They're nice plants with big root systems. However, the shipping is a little pricey. I only have one nursery in my area that carries milkweed, and they're always white. Big Dipper has some pretty colors. One I planted last year, is already taller than I am. I know I'm only 5'4", but still... They also have the butterfly weed, but I usually stick with the milkweed.
I also bought some milkweed from Big Dipper Farm. I received some very nice plants. They are a bit on the high side as far as prices but the quality is very good and the plants arrived in excellent condition.
Great site with lots of inof and milkweed seeds available also.

Thanks to you both!!
My pleasure :-)
Enjoy your butterflies.
:-D
Not a discouraging word but just an observation: all the milkweed I've bought or been given has come with eggs or larvae installed. Thus necessitating the purchase of more milkweed as they grew. By my calculations, at the end of the season I'll have a half-acre of milkweed ;-)

Thanks for all the links. I have 12 acres and happy to share an acre or so ;-)
Hey sl~
Where've you been?
Welcome back.
Heya Flyboy - sorry, been working my tail off between the business and the gardens. Its hot as hades here and Im just spent by the time I get in. Hope I havent missed anything interesting ;-)
slgrowers I have fresh harvested A. curassavica Scarlet Blood Flower and Silky Gold if you still need some. I have them up for SASBE on the seed trading forum.
Donna, is the Scarlet Blood Flower a solid red flower, or does it have some orange?
it is the red and yellow/orangish color. Need some?
That's it. I couldn't find a better pic. (I need to spend an entire day just organizing my pics!) Thanks, but I have plenty of it. I've already got pods reseeding now, which is OK! :)
do you need the all yellow one Silky Gold??
For some strange reason, this year I have solid yellow ones too. I thought it was from some seeds I had put out (but can't remember when I did it) but then my mom suddenly has yellow ones from her orange/red ones too. Thanks anyways! Now if you had white or pink...
I was looking for milkweed, too and came across this site. Not sure how old it is, but it does include a phone number. I'm certainly going to give it a shot, and wanted to share with you all.
Good Luck,
PiggyPoo :)

Thanks everyone - sorry I havent been very active lately - been busy with work. I will get caught up on this thread and get to those sites and order some milkweed - yes, I will take any seed, I am not growing it for it's color or look, just planting for the butterflies so any seeds for SASE would be welcome. Just send me a DG mail so I can keep track of it. Thanks
