Can I raise a kitten with my bird?

Anyone had any luck with a kitten growing up with a bird? I have 2 Shelties and they love & play with my sun conure but I'd love a cat also. I am afraid, as I don't keep my bird in a cage. Some people say it's okay to have a cat IF it's raised around the bird. I don't want to endanger my bird. What do you think?
