Streptocarpus Concord Blue

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I picked up in Geogia last summer. It is a wonderful bloomer and very easy to root also.

I love that blue and they are such happy lil bloomers.

I searched and searched for mine and finally found a badly grown hanging basket at a local HD. It is recovering but slowly.

Thanks for sharing the great pic.

they don't like any sun at all down south. Just bright light MsC. That's probably why it was in such bad shape when you found it. Those kind of places just put everything together

Thanks for the tip DonnaB,
Mine is on the shaded porch right now and I'm trying to decide if I'd rather have it in the house...it's even tooo hot for me out there in the shade.:)

Mine is on the north side of my porch rail and only gets bright light. It is really thriving. You are a 1/2 zone hotter so that may make a difference.

This heat is killing me with this back brace. I get soaked as soon as I got out the door. I even sweat under this thing inside in the a/c. 1 month down 5 more to go!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh DonnaB,
Hugs to you!
I can only imagine the heat with that backbrace on! UGH!
It's bad enough to be in pain, but to be HOT and in Pain it's gotta be tough!

Hang in there and I'll say a prayer you are a fast healer!

DonnaB:

What is it and where can I get myself one? I love the color. Is it an indoor plant? I live in Tucson and it's been 110 degrees yesterday and the day before, 108 today.

Yes you can grow it indoors. I have mine on the front porch. It likes high humidity and bright light. No direct light. I found it on a trip to Georgia. I found a web site that sell all kinds of gesneriads for about 5 dollars a piece which is great. Better than the prices I have seen them go for on e-bay.

DonnaB, try a liberal patting-down with a "cornstarch" baby powder before you put on the brace. It may help. Hugs to you (but not too hard, don't want to hurt you!)

Hi all... I have four rooted cuttings available of this guy, if anyone is interested. (Actually I have 5 but I'm keeping one - hehe) First come, first serve - SASBE. Enjoy!

Sannajane I would be interested in the rooted cutting for SASBE is it still available?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sanna, just a thought... maybe you could keep two of them and send one to DonnaB next spring? Hopefully by then she'll have settled in somewhere and be ready to start thinking about a new garden... sounds like she lost everything when the hurricane hit, but at least she's OK. She sent me such a generous packet when I first subscribed last winter, and I'll be saving seeds & propagating goodies for her too.

(Edited to add that I'd be glad to cover postage or to send you a trade box on her behalf next year.)

That's a great idea, critterologist.... I will do that. I will probably be starting some more cuttings soon anyway, after the current flurry of blooms. It's gorgeous right now!

sann - tell me how you start the cuttings. I have had a step for two summers. First summer it was drop dead gorgeous- brought it in, cut it back and it came back but not nearly so beautiful. Had dismal results with starting the cuttings - cover/not cover???

Well, whether or not it was "standard procedure", when I was cutting it back a bit because it had gotten leggy, I put about 6 cuttings in water (stripped a few bottom leaves off) and let them go! I used a small clear jar, and covered it with plastic wrap and a rubber band. I poked 6 holes in the tight saran wrap and put a cutting in each hole. The only reason I did all that was to help keep them upright in the jar. They rooted very easily. And by the way, it was the variety shown above....

Hope that helps! And for those I shared my cuttings with, I hope they do well once planted..... mine right now is blooming like crazy and soooo pretty.
