Hail damage

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Here is a picture of my Peaches and Cream after 2 nights of hail damage. Poor baby and she was looking so beautiful.

She was growing and putting on a lot of new leaves. I just hope she will come back. This is the plant that 8ftbed gave me.

Linda,

I can relate!!! It just made me sick the damage our storm did to my leaves. I wouldn't worry about her coming back, I'm sure she will, it's just that she'll have to start over on her leaves.

Oh Linda, I'm so sorry! But they will grow....at least it didn't knock the top out of them. That would have been horrible. I hope your bad weather is over....but looking at our weather, I don't think you're going to be so lucky. Sorry!!!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Yes you are right my whole plant could have been broken in half, I have been thanking god all morning that all my damage was just leaf damage. I know the leaves will come back. I never had any of my plants get broken just the leaves.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Brinda, is there more coming this way? We had horrible winds last night and Day Dreams has no leaves left on her but her growth point was saved. I had a twenty gallon banana that went over like it was weightless and I can't even pick the pot up. Lots of stuff is now leaning, but with a good sunny day, they will probably straighten back up some. I hope we don't have one of those stormy summers.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sounds just terrible. That is the good thing about brugs, they constantly refoliate. I hope your bad weather is over. Such cute brugs.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Shirley, your weather looks good for today. http://wwwa.accuweather.com/index-forecast.asp?u=1&partner=accuweather&zipcode=50049&go.x=13&go.y=1
But we are supposed to have storms this afternoon and tonight. (Which could be heading your way) Then it looks good for us until the middle of the week. Sorry to hear about your storms. I just hate that. I'm so happy the growth poing on Day Dreams was saved. Especially since I'm drooling over it....LOL I hope you luck out and don't have more storms in your area.

I did hear the other day that they are predicting many storms for us in June. Which is very unusual. We normally start in March and pretty well have it over by June. But we only had one tornado watch so far this year, which is pretty strange for us.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Will yesterday afternoon and this morning I finally did something that made me sick. I got out and removed all the damaged leaves on all my brugs. On some of them it left them a little naked. My DH asked me last night why I was doing it and I told him they awful that way. And besides when I foliar feed I need to make sure all the new leaves was getting the nutrients and not the ugly torn up leaves. My P&C that 8ftbed send me only has about 5 leaves left on it and my Maya has 4. But they are getting a bunch of new ones. All my other brugs do have a lot of new leaves coming on so maybe in about 2 to 3 weeks they will look better. I did use Messenger with plant food this morning when I foliar sprayed so that should help them.

I have been looking at all the posts and seeing everyones beautiful blooms and it just gets me going. I want them real bad.

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/517572/

There is some pictures of the hail damage I got. The weather man is predicting more bad weather tonight and the next couple of days. I hope it doesn't have hail with it.

Here are a couple more.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

2pugdogs my brugs look like yours, except it is bug damage. lol

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Bless your heart, mine look exactly the same way. The ones that escaped the first storm got hit hard by the last one and we have more predicted, but right NOW it's 90 degrees!!! At least it will dry them out, everything is so water logged. My poor white Datura had a dish under the pot so it was full of water the 3 days it rained ...so it's trying to die on me. Live and learn!!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I am thinking about going to Lowe's and buying some hail screen rigging up something to help protect them, cause like you they are predicting more back weather starting tonight.

mini and Judy, it is so heart breaking seeing your babies either eaten up by bugs or getting hail damage after we baby them all winter. But like I have read in other posts that Brugs are so forgiving and they do come back.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Linda... different from what I suggested in the other hail thread but since it's against the house how about getting 4 stakes. Two along the back of the bed should be taller than 2 along the front. Then put fine mesh or hardware cloth over the top. A little hail protection.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

What kind of hardware cloth would be good? That may be cheaper then hail screen, I know last my husband bought some and he said he just about had to take out a loan to pay for it. Of course our small town lumber yard is a lot higher then if I were to go to Lowes, or to Home Depot.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

nawww, go for the cheap! Don't you have any busted window screens laying around... or laying around in the neighbors yard? :)

This is just temporary so I'd get any kind of screen or fence that's small enough to stop or break up the hail. When's trash day in your neighbor hood? Cruise the curb the night before. Someone is probably throwing out a screen door or something. If it'll make you feel better, spray paint it if it's rusted. :)

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I live 6 miles out in the country. No trash days and no neat stuff sitting on the curbs either. My husband does have a couple of tarps and I have some plastic table cloths,I could rig up something. I will talk with him when he gets home tonight. It may not be pretty but as long as it is effective.

I know our tomato plants are in cages and we have a piece of hail screen laying on top, and the last storm didn't seem to have any effect on them. They are looking good, and getting loads of tomatoes.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

loads of tomatoes...

I've got 3 (out of 6) that are starting to bloom but they just went in the ground 10 days ago. :)

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

We have had ours in for a while and they are getting loaded with tomatoes, of course there is a zone difference with us. Here is a picture of it.

2pug, your stuff looks like mine when the hail/wind it and we are expecting more, we've had drenching rain the last two or three days, but we needed it. I can still see the hail/wind damage from earlier storms, but no one else notices. Yours will leaf out again soon too!!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

We missed all the bad weather yesterday, TG. So far today we are getting a gentle rain, now that is no problem. But yesterday morning before I went shopping I took all the buckets I had and extra trash can and placed over my plants then the ones that are to tall I took our patio chairs and placed over them. I figured what the heck they are sitting out in the weather anyway might as will put them to good use. So if it hails again they won't get as much damage if any. When you are all prepared you usually don't get what you are prepared for. I hope that works. Because I do still have some things that aren't protected. But my Hibiscus and Brugs are.

I hope they do come back. I have started using the Cal/Mag Plus I got on them, but still to early to tell. I am feeding regular now that is when the weather permits. So I am keeping my fingers crossed, and saying a little prayer for them every chance I get.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Oh Linda, I sure hope you miss it for the weekend. We had horrible storms last night with hurricane force winds. It was really bad....my son's bedroom window blew out around 3:00 am. That was a shock. All my plants look like they have been thru a hurricane for sure. Everything is tattered and torn. But I'm not going to worry about that, I'm just gonna cut them off and wish for new ones.

Our weather looks bad for tonight, but it also looks like it's heading your way. I hope you get lucky!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Brinda thanks for the warning. I feel so bad for you, I know how I felt after all the hail damage I had. Last night about 7 we had this one gush of wind that hit us and everything went sailing through the air. Hanging baskets and all the buckets and chairs I had covering all my brugs. But that was the end of the wind. Then the rain came and it has rained all night and still is raining. If rain is all we get I am going to be thankful. My front yard looks like a lake, we always flood real bad after a hard or heavy rain.

I have been doing a lot a thinking about the poor people that is in line for the hurricane. I hope it misses everyone or better yet goes away before it hits anyone.

Pinch off the damage leaves or cut all the broken limbs that is about all we can do, and wait for them regrow. TG brugs do bounce back pretty fast. The weather man did say we had bad weather to look forward to for the entire week-end.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Brin, I am sure glad you are okay. Plants can be replaced. This has been a very stormy spring so far. I hope it doesn't turn off hot and dry now. Linda, did you get through the storm okay or did it bypass you? I'm sure if you guys lost anything, we can replace it for you this fall if not sooner.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

So far for the last two days all I have had is rain. It looks like we have have gotten a little wind last night, my castor beans are laying over, but once the sun comes out they will perk right up. I have been covering all my brugs at night. That reminds me I need to go outside and move the lawn chair, so they can get some sun.

Brinda I hope everything is good at your place. Let me know.

Linda

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Mine are looking kinda shabby too (but not all of them) because it's been very windy. Amazing the damage wind can do - holes in the leaves, shredded look. I have found that the brugs with the smaller leaves (like my Cherokee) tend to handle the wind better. I just have to remind myself how fast these grow, and that they will grow new leaves.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

The leaves do tend to snap off real easy. I know there has been times that I gotten to close to one and hit it just right and would break a leaf off. But you are right, they do grow fast. I think everywhere where I removed a damaged leaf there are at lease two or three leaves coming on in it's place.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Shirley & Linda, thanks for your concern....everyone here is fine, just looking tattered & torn is all. LOL

We are under yet another tornado warning all day today and it's starting to look ugly outside. I've been potting up as fast as I possibly can! And believe me, my body feels it.

DH told me he wanted it all potted up or in the ground by this evening. Hahahahahahhahahahaha.....that does make me laugh. I think he understands my 'slowness' since he helped me repot a couple of huge brugs.

He's been working on our pool for over a month now and everytime he gets it ready to go we have another storm that creates a problem for him with the water clarity, not to mention the problems he has had with the pump. He doesn't seem to be in a very good mood lately! LOL Wonder why? His goal was to have the pool ready by Memorial Day Weekend.....nope...nada, didn't happen. And of course our 10 yr old son won't let him live it down.

I wish for everyone a great gardening season. It would be nice to have the nice calm rains......too bad we can't get what we wish for. Linda, I hope you don't get it again tonight. Right now it looks like it's heading your way.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

It is heading my way I just had finished putting all the plants out so they could soak up the sun and then there wasn't anymore sun. My DH came back from his brothers and said we better get all your plants under wrap again because it is a coming. They are saying golf ball size hail and up to 70 mile an hour wind. I thought there for a while the way the weather was looking it may clear off and be pretty. Nada it isn't going to happen. I am tired of all this lousy weather. My plants are getting stressed out from being moved here and there, and getting covered up not being able to sun. Here comes the rain, and the lighting. Better get off of here. I will be thinking about you Brinda. Good luck.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

2pugdogs,

I sure hope you and your plants are OK???

Judy

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

Fingers crossed that the hail and winds are just an ugly rumor.

Don't you wish we had some control over the weather. I was ****** when the heavy rains this winter drowned my Pink Bower Vine.

Mary

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

So far so good. We did get some heavy rains and some wind but none of the 70 mile an hr. that was predicted, and TG no hail. The rain has stopped but the sky looks like we may be getting ready for round 2. Thanks everyone for all your concern.

Yes Mary it would be nice to be able to control the weather, and Judy I think I am going to keep everything covered for the time being, they may not like it but mother knows best.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Well have to compate notes in a few weeks to see what survived.

Judy

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I'm for doing that. How has your weather been?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm glad you are all okay. We had rain today, but nothing serious. I hear it is going to continue through Tuesday and then we get a three day break. I'm ready.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I am more then ready for a break. Is that something like Spring Break, when all the fun starts?

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Whew....what a ride!!! LOL We're all just fine here but everything is soooooo soaked and wind torn. We spend about 30 minutes in the cellar with a few tornadoes touching down in a couple of Oklahoma areas. Sure wasn't any fun, but everything is salvagable. Did you get hit Brugie & Linda? I noticed our weather said it was heading to Kansas & up to Iowa. I sure hope everyone is ok this morning!!!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

We are looking good no bad winds or hail. We have a green light now for the next 7 days, no bad storms or any rain in the forecast. That is the best news I have heard in a while.

Judy how are you doing this fine Monday morning?

Brinda good to hear you made it through it, I hope your plants come around, like they say Brugs are fast growers, and they bounce back good, lets hope so for all our sake.

Not much wind today suppose to be in the mid 80 and I can image what the humidity is going to be like. We will think we are in Mississippi, don't they have alot of humidity? But that is better then what we have had.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

It sounds terrible out there. Is every body ok? Let's hear from you.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

It's good to hear from you this morning Linda! I know you've got to be excited that things are looking up for you. Enjoy the break and I hope for you that all the bad weather is over for this season. Geeeeezzzzzzz.....it's been rough over the past few weeks!

I did a quick sweep this morning and I only found 2 plants that got it. I had a huge Datura Black Currant Swirl that broke off at the base. I'm sure it's a gonner, even though I stuck it back in the dirt. I don't know anyone that has rooted one yet, maybe I'll get lucky....LOL I also had a huge Illustris EE that was uprooted, but I fixed it back in the dirt and cut off the huge leaves that were laying down and I'm sure it will be good to go.

Anyone heard from Brugie this morning?
