We had quarter size hail last night anyway that is what our news station said, but it looked more like nickle size, but what the heck it broke off a lot of my leaves and put holes in the rest of them. This can be so discouraging, for something like this to happen after you nurse them all winter long.
But I guess they have to learn to survive the elements of the weather. It started about 10pm just getting ready for bed and couldn't go out to try and cover anything. I should count my blessings we had tornado warnings out for an area just about 4 miles east of us. Non of them touched down, so I am thank you for that.
Linda
Hail last night
Bless your heart. I certainly know how it feels. What I'm about to do is trim off all the damaged leaves so new ones can grow.
So sorry this happened to you.. I bet the puny one didn't have any damage did he?
Judy
Your're right that ugly thing looks just like it did, the only broken leaf found on it came from the one sitting beside it.
Linda
I knew it!!! Are you just gonna put him in the ground and if he lives he lives if not, Oh Well???
I am going to dig it up this afternoon and plant another one in its place and put it in a smaller pot and just hide it out and see how it comes out. That is if the roots look ok. I have two Isabella's that I started from seed that is still in gal. pots that look a look better then this one. But I did want it to do so good cause it was my first one to Y and it ended up with 4 Y's on one stem. I hate to throw anything away if there is a chance for it to come around.
Linda
Oh Gracious Linda,
That's the way I am and I can't walk on the porches for all the plants and critters. Too many of everything!!!
Judy
I know my DH asked me about a week ago what I was going to do with all these plants come winter. I just looked at him and smiled. I have been hinting for a GH but I think it goes in one ear and straight out the other. LOL
Linda
I know exactly where you are LindaKS, we've had hail three times this spring, not as large as yours but it went through tender leaves like they were being shot with buckshot, then the wind tore them apart. When I look at them now, I can 'see' each storm in their leaves. They grow fast Linda and in no time they'll look like different plants. Last year, it seemed that nothing I did went right, and it was misery seeing all the beautiful photos, knowing mine should look good too, but didn't, and to compound it all, I ain't no photog. I've found this helps - if you get one you just do not like, for whatever reason, move it outta your sight and forget it for, say, a couple of weeks, don't even take a peek. When you go back, if it doesn't look better, maybe it's time to say bye-bye. My experience, every time I've done this, is that they look oh so much better and it taught me that often 'not enough' is better than 'too much'. Good Luck!!
We usually get hail here in April, when my apricot tree is in bloom. One year it took all my bloom sofff an dI got no apricots!
Linda, how often do you get it where you are? I wonder what causes it. It is not even cold when it happens here.
In the past it happens pretty often around May. But this year the weather has been so unusual. It happens here like when it is hot and then all the sudden the wind starts to cool down and then it rains. We have been fairly lucky so far last night was our first hail, and some surrounding towns have been getting it.
Gosh Linda, I hope it wasn't too bad at your house. Our weather has been really unusual this year also. We haven't had one bad storm or tornado all year. But they are predicting horrible storms tonight. The weathermen keep saying it will be a deadly night if all the elements come together like they think they will. I'll be sick if all my plants get hail damage or too much wind. But DH did open the cellar and get it swept out for tonight 'just in case'!
We are getting the same forecast as you. I told my DH I was moving everything that is in pots to the front porch. I had some brugs that were starting to look pretty good and after last night I am sick. I still have them but they are minus a few leaves and what leaves are on them have either holes in them and they are torn.
I hate this kinda of weather. It is damaging and so scarily.
Linda
Brinda it has started. We are getting quarter size hail right now. I think it just stopped. I haven't even had time to get anything moved yet. If it starts up again it will surely wipe me out. Please everyone say a little prayer for me and keep your fingers and toes crossed so maybe I won't get wiped out.
Sirens are screaming here, hope it is not gonna be too bad.
After the hail my DH helped me put everything on the porch that I could move, but of course everything planted in the ground is there to stay. It had quit raining for a while but the TV was saying tornado's all around us. The lightening started and then the electric went out. So my DH and I loaded the pugs and ourselves up in his pickup and went to town to get something to eat around 7pm. When we got home still no electric. Just getting rain now. So at 9:30 we went to bed couldn't do anything else. We had just gotten to sleep when we were awoken by more hail. Then finally around 11:30 the electric came back on.
Will this morning everything looks pretty bad. I am waiting a little longer before I go outside and really check things out. Will I did have 6 brugs in pots that are on my porch and all my hibiscus. 15 brugs in the ground. My poor Maya and Peaches and Cream as of yesterday are still with me. Just hope they made it through last night.
I will report back about noon on everything.
Rootdoctor I hope everything is alright at your place.
2PD, I'm so sorry to hear about last night. We had horrible storms with wind, heavy rain and hail from 6:00 PM til 3:00 AM. On the weather station it looked like about 7 different storms heading out way. Yuck! We were fortunate though, the hail we got was mostly quarter sized with a few the size of golfballs. It was nasty to say the least. I have damage that I would consider minor. It was bad, but not that bad on the plants. (This was our first bad storm of the year, very strange) I was so worried about the pool. We just replaced the liner last year due to a horrible hail storm the year before. Luckily when DH heard of the storms heading our way yesterday, he filled the pool up as high as it would hold. That helped with the hail hitting it.
I hope everything at your house is not hurt. And Rootdoctor......I sure hope everyone & everything is ok.
I'm glad you didn't lose any plants. The leaves will be fresh and new before you know it. I found last year that the hail did spot the trunks of my plants pretty bad and that doesn't change.
I'm so sorry your brugs got torn up by hail. We used to get hail about once every spring in TN, but not nearly as much as the midwest or Colorado. It is rare down here, but last week, one county west of us had dime sized hail.
For those that want to know what causes hail, here is a link: http://www.wisegeek.com/how-does-hail-form.htm
The layout on the page is odd, the info starts in the upper right hand corner.
Calalily thanks for that link about hail it was real informative. We usually have a few storms in the early spring and that is it. But of course with the way the weather has been lately (real Odd) it is hard to tell what could be coming. All I know is I hope that is the end of it.
Linda
one more
This is the first time I have ever used mulch. I was told by my BIL that cats really like the mulch, so I never used it, but this year I thought I would give it a try. I have seen many pictures from other DG'ers that use the mulch and it makes the flowers look so neat. So I went out and got me some Cedar Mulch, so far the momma cat and her 4 babies hasn't messed with it.
Your pictures look very nice. I like the mulch for keeping the moisture in, but this year, my mulch is still in the back of the truck. I got to hot to put it down.
your plants are looking good, I was thinking of putting Mulch on my Brugs, it is so hot and dry here I am watering twice a day and the leaves are still turning yellow.
Doris, I'm having the same problem. It's so hot and humid here.
It's not the heat, it's the humidity...LOL
Wasn't it not too long ago that I was complaining that it wouldn't warm up fast enough? What in blazes was I thinking?
I took a dip in the kiddie pool tonight just to get through planting hostas...created quite a neighborhood stir
I can't finish mulching yet because we still have a gazillion helicopters sailing down daily, so I have mulch envy!
Linda, your garden looks great!
MULCH!! Absolutely on everything.
If anyone is mowing and bagging grass - go get it while it's fresh.
I mulch my containers with shredded leaves and discovered Polly does the same thing.
Jackie, I guess we need to be careful what we ask for. LOL It's another weird year for weather.
It sure looks like those babies are enjoying the mulch! Nice job!!!
