tropical bed

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Backyard tropical bed-my theory-if you have weeds, you don't have enough plants. I still have weeds--so I have more planting to do.

Looking good Barb. Been trying to make some beds like that. DH moaning about the grass/weeds and not being able to mow. I said you have to give it a little time to grow. I am putting in the irises along the walk way to the GH and have it roped off so he can't mow them down

I see a v-stag... unless its a hosta... what banana is that in the right top part?

I think we need to go to her house for a tour.

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

ely-it is a v-stag. May have to move it. The variegation gets burned. Really like the plant.Trying it in several locations. The banana is not eatable multiplies like crazy and have to take machete to them to keep them under control.

Rylaff, LOL I only show the beds that have been weeded-you don't get to see the ones with weeds that look a mess.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Oh, oh I have it... can you go into your picture software program, copy this picture and label all the plants?? I would absolutely love to see it.... would it be a lot of trouble?

mine only gets morning sun. and it seems to like that.... do you think your v-stag bulb looks different from the regular stag bulb ? you don't know the name of the banna? I have seen it or something that looks like it at nurserys and no one knows the name....

Beautiful!!! I can't believe you said you take a machette to the bananas....sheesh! Now a v-stag is that an elephant ear? Quit talking Greek again!

PerennialGirl, actually it is a xanthosoma sagittifolium variegata-the reason for the talking greek is no one can spell sagittifolium-or should I say-I can't spell it. LOL

Great bed Barb!! :-)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Very pretty bed, Barb. I'd even like to see the weedy ones. You have such awesome plants.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Barb, your beds are so beautiful. I can't imagine all the work you've put into planting and taking care of them. You should be so proud.....they are gorgeous and so healthy looking too.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

WOW

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Do you take them all up for winter and replant them in spring, Barb? You get frost right? They look so huge and happy and lush. I can't believe you recently replanted them all and it looks like that. Perfect melding!!

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

kell, almost all the plants in that bed are left in the ground year round. Only add coleus for color. Most of my beds are like that. I add one or two thing that can not survive our winters.

I can't tell you how many times I've looked at this pic. It is so pretty. Barb, is that a zebra grass on the right side of the pic? Please tell me that real name for it.

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Brenda, thanks for the encouragement.
Miscanthus sinensis zebrinus; Zebra Grass

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

LOL Barb, it sure doesn't look like you need encouragement to me. You've done a spectaular job. I can't imagine how much work it must have been. Wow!!! Thanks for the heads up on the Zebra Grass. I love it and I think I'm on my way to find out where I can get it and if it will grow here. It sure is pretty!

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Brinda, copied following info for you and link
http://www.greenbeam.com/features/plant091701.stm
Miscanthus is a warm-season grass, so it transplants best in spring. It is hardy to USDA Hardiness Zone 5. Propagation is by division in spring.

Like other members of the species, zebra grass grows in full sun or very light shade. It becomes less vigorous and has a tendency to flop over in too-heavy shade. It's tolerant of summer heat and humidity.

Adaptable to most well-drained soils, plants tolerate soils that are acidic, sandy, loamy, clay or slightly alkaline. The species is drought tolerant; soil salt tolerance is poor.

Thank you Barb, that is great info. I will save it to use later. I'll certainly be on a mission come next February to find it. LOL Thanks so much again!
