I am looking for a very fragrant vine and in my Sunset book there is a Jasminum Sambac or the common name: Pikake or Arabian Jasmine. Has anyone grown this or other jasmine that is highly fragrant? I am also looking for Night blooming jasmine but do not know the scientific name. Does anyone know about this plant? I also have heard that there is a Morning Glory that is highly scented does anyone know about this plant?
Sorry for all the questions.
Pikake or fragrant jasmine
Night Blooming Jasmine-cestrum nocturnum
Pikake Jasmine-several have this common name but the most common one is Jasmine sambac "Maid of Orleans"
Yes, I've grown Pikake-here in South CA. I found this plant in a .99 cent store. I picked mine from a group of 5-10 plants. Most of them were blooming. These grow "wild" in Hawaii-so humidty is needed along w/ direct sun. I would'nt grow it in
temps below 40 degrees you can try covering it at night/bringing it in. Since I have it in a pot, I keep feeding it regularly every 6/8 weeks bone meal and worm compost monthly. I water it every 2/3 days.If you have a sunny warm spot-it should thrive
I've been growing J. sambac on my patio and it survived the winter with that little bit of protection. If you're looking for vines with lots of fragrance that should do OK without protection in winter, you might check out Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides). All my other fragrant plants I have to be right next to them before I can smell them, but the star jasmine can be smelled from quite a distance away.
Thank you for posting about Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) ecrane3......I too have Night Blooming Jasmine and I really don't notice it's scent.
Now to find someone that sells it in Canada.
I have a bunch of Night-blooming jasmine and can notice it's fragrance when only 5 flowers are blooming. I currently have 4 good-sized plants in full bloom with easily over 250 flowers open with more on the way. About 8pm rolls around and I start to smell them. Within an hour, the entire downstairs is filled with the aroma that I can still smell the next morning.
Editted to say: Did a brief count and in my main plant room, between 4 night-blooming jasmine plants, there's well over 500 open flowers. Has gone from a fragrance to a fog....
I have one small jasmine plant. Not sure which kind it is, but the flowers are used to make jasmine tea.
